Hey guys I’ve got this 2010 Tacoma with 180k miles on it or 290km from salty Ontario Canada. Everything about the truck is great no engine issues etc the only thing I’m worried about is the frame given the recall and all. I called the dealership for the free inspection, they said they’d get back to me on Monday but from what I’ve heard and read on here and other places they aren’t too keen on doing the job and try to get out of it ( this was the feeling I got from the dealership almost like he wasn’t aware of the issue). I’ll attach a few photos I’m sure you guys know better than I do and a second opinion would be great before the dealer. Thanks
If you need to see other angles just let me know ✌️3764D553-79CA-4EEC-B02A-9EAC9DF5511B.jpgBB4D4EF9-A4CF-4063-8F96-484B6915C192.jpg 9D1E5873-9F8D-46E5-AF2C-6D89E423DD4D.jpg BB4D4EF9-A4CF-4063-8F96-484B6915C192.jpgF877B1DB-9C52-44CD-8D1A-47A05792B816.jpg

You have an advanced rusting issue going on. Your at the point you need to seriously start thinking about the future with this truck. It will become a liability and safety issue, it will continue to rust away. The frame looks like it was never treated or maintained.

Typical for a 12 year old truck that nobody cared enough to oil spray underneath to protect for the salty winter roads. Hope you did not pay too much for it.

Thanks for the feed back guys, since taking the photos I’ve take a hammer/ metal paint scraper to most of the frame and luckily it seems hard all the way though bouncing my hammer back, some small rust flakes but bad surface rust over most of it. Just wanted to add that extra info invade it helps paint a picture.

I've heard of dealers in warm weather areas not being keen on dealing with inspecting/replacing rusty frames (mainly due to lack of experience), but not so much dealers in the colder weather / rust belt areas. If you're still within the frame replacement window you need to get to a dealership ASAP. Also, if you don't feel confident in your current dealer then ask or research around to find one that is competent and plenty experienced with this.

At this point I would take the matter into my own hands. I would look into POR-15 and get dirty.

I’m taking it in on Monday for the frame inspection and if they don’t honour it then that’s what I’m thinking. Section by section until it’s all black and hope for the best still haven’t found any holes or thin spots

Find a dealer with a pile of rusty old frames somewhere out back. These are the ones not only comfortable doing the swap, but also smart enough to realize its a cash cow to replace frames. If there's a hole, they will find it.

Only if OP is outside the frame inspection/replacement window.

I'm curious, how much time do you have left on your frame inspection/replacement window?

    Exactly.

I’ve seen a few conflicting answers to that, some say 10 years from first use some say 12 some say it was extended some say extensions were cut so I’m really not sure. The dealership seemed unsure about what I meant and had to explain the recall over the phone so we’ll see when the mechanics are in tomorrow

Yikes ! Hopefully the dealer replaces that .....if not & you have the time and are willing to invest some $ $ I recommend : evaporust , black star rust converter , a good rust encapsulater paint , lots of wire brushes , an air powered needle scaler and a good relationship with a pull a parts type junkyard .I went through this restoring a rust-belt ohio vehicle- do able, but not fun....
