All kidding aside I'm coming up on one year of ownership and I have a whopping 1000 miles put on her. My question is about the using Motul 8100 Ow-20 and if anyone has use this in their truck? Also, will Toyota care change the oil being I'm not at the 10,000-mile interval? I just want to change it being it is a year old.

No need to run a boutique oil. Any good quality synthetic will be fine.

I would call the dealer and ask. I've seen some do it early and some won't. It really depends on the dealer.

I think I’ve seen 1 yr change is typical. Just wondering 1000 miles. Wow. I guess it’s just washing and waxing mileage. Change it. Good luck

Toyota Care should change it as the spec is 1 year or 10,000 Miles, any 0w-20 will be fine.

I believe the factory services go by mileage or time (6 months I believe). I just had the 40k service done even though my truck is only at 36k. The dealer told me that since it had been 6 months since my last service it was time for the next one.

I would use regular synthetic oil and change it every 6 months. Oil breaks down and probably has a lot of mosture in it.

You paid for two changes when you bought it, redeem if you like. Decent dealer will give you those two whenever you like.

I too put low miles on mine, I do annual changes DIY. Likely draining perfectly good oil, but I don't want a fight on warranty should any issue comes up.

If you want to splurge on expensive oil then by all means, it's your money and truck! I ran Motul in my GTI a while back. However there isn't anything really superior about it. It was just one of the cheaper options in an oil change kit. There also isn't anything special about the 8100 eco-lite 0w20, other than the price.

You can change the oil whenever you want. Some dealers will let you use your free one before 10K, some not. I changed the oil out myself at 4500 miles and let the dealer change it at 10K. I had to pay to get the oil changed at the 15K service. I woulda done it myself, but it was winter and I was preparing to move, so no time.

What would you hope to gain by using some exotic oil except a lighter wallet.

thanks for all the replies. I just want to stick with motul being that is what I have used in both my Mercedes AMGs with one being high mileage and it's been really good to those cars. never any engine problems and they are high horsepower and torque cars.

I don't see any issue with that, but the 3.5L will be fine on any name brand 0w20 synthetic. If you want to find something "extra" find an oil that has a good does of molybdenum to protect those timing chains.

Your dealer should of made you a 1st toyotacare service appointment for the first 6 month oil change, and tire rotation no matter what your mileage reads. After that, its for every 10k miles....at least thats what i was told when i bought my truck. They even contacted a local dealer near me to make an arrangement to have it serviced there, being purchased 160 miles away in another state.

Never understand people who put expensive oil in their cars and trucks. Oil today is so good. No need to waste the extra money.
What can go wrong with the engine if you put bad, cheap oil? Spin a bearing? Get a loose timing chain? I am honestly asking this question?

The only issue I see now at days with engines is oil burning….but that is due to people not changing their oil on time.

The interval is 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first. So in your case it’s time limit.

1,000 miles in one year?! My god I thought I was a low mileage driver at 5k a year. Does the truck sit unused for long periods of time? Might be some considerations for both oil and fuel you should consider if so.

Yea it seems as though it does depend on the dealer. I asked I-10 toyota out by me if they would do the first oil change at 5k miles and they refused. Said I would have to pay for it out of pocket and then they would cover the 10k oil change.

I change mine every 1,000 miles with Mobile 1 (which comes out to around every 6 months.) Even in that short amount of time/mileage the oil is dark black. My advice... get to know your truck and do it yourself. Don't let a quick lube place (including the dealership) touch it.

I’ve never used motul in the engine but I have used it in the differential and gearbox of my old subie.

I’ll probably continue on that track with the Tacoma (minus the gearbox)

I didn’t put a lot of miles on my truck. Toyota Care goes by miles or time. Fire me, I always had my oil changed not because of miles but because of the length of time since my last oil change. That’s was in 2018. Don’t know if it’s any different now or not.

That’s a great question and it just shines a light on the confusion some consumers have. I blame it on borderline false advertising and not knowing that all lubricating oils sold in U.S. must meet a minimum standard set forth by SAE. All good but some regional and bargain brands don’t meet the standards, however if you stick with the well known brands you’ll be ok.

Hop on over to www.Bobistheoilguy.com and read up and also look at the trade magazine “Lubes and Greases” which covers the worldwide industry. That said I understand how people can form wrong ideas or loyalties to certain so called premium brands. Your best choice would be to understand how oils are rated and then use oil analysis to really look at the chemical makeup and conditions going on inside your engine. Not a week goes by that oil threads pop up here just filled with bullshit and misinformation, it’s sad.
