    Oh geeze,

I switched dealerships after my first experience.

Fortunately, I had the original thin skid so it wasn't all too bad...one air dam bolt was screwed in at angle and the skid plate bolts were over torqued.

The oil pan bolt wasn't over torqued and the plastic oil filter housing was not chipped or anything.

The second dealership I took it to for the remaining 2yr scheduled maintenance met my needs.

Now, I'm doing my own oil changes at the Auto Hobby Shop on Dover AFB, DE.

After the last two services at my dealership I looked for a local shop. Found one that does only Toyota and Lexus 3 miles from my house with decent reviews. Guess where truck is going in December when it's due again? :)

If you have oem thin sked plate who knows what they attempted. With the TRD skid plate there's a trap door to remove the oil filter. It is offset from the drain plug. Unless the shop (surely not a Toyota Dealership) didn't do use the little kit that allows the filter to be drained, then there would be near a quart of oil spilled on the inside of the skid plate. The one independent shop I used ONCE said they did it that way to save me money because they charge $20 to remove the skid plate. I called BS and pointed out there is a $10 kit they should have for changes on these trucks. Deer in the headlights stair followed.

Is this a Toyota OEM part? I wasn't aware of this so any info would be appreciated. I want to make sure the new shop I found uses it.

Tell that to the two hours that I wasted taking it to and from the dealer. And then cleaning the truck after they “cleaned it”.

Fuck do I know if they even torqued shit or UggA DuggA the crap out of my oil pan and plastic housing

My several free Toyotacare oil changes have been great. Stop in on my way to work, get a cup of coffee in the well-appointed waiting room while they change oil and rotate the tires. Then they wash the truck and vacuum it for me and send me on my way. The dealer I take it to does great work. Guess it depends on your dealer. Now, of course as soon as my freebies are done I'll be buying the filter wrench thing and figuring out the few extra steps the 3rd gen takes to do it myself!

You know this thread is making me want to complain about how the tech's broke two of my wheel locks on different occasions and then said it wasn't their job to fix them. So i go in for Toyota care with 5 lugs and they get nervous until i re-explain they broke them on prior occasions.

Sorry for your poor experience. Classic example of a free service barely making it free when its complete.

Edit-bought new oem lugs to replace the broken locks and realize they somehow stripped one my studs. Going to bring this up for replacement at n/c

I went into Toyota for the 20K routine oil change, dropped it off. They called about 2 hours later saying its done. I walk up to my truck and notice there is a puddle of oil underneath it (I had previously removed the TRD skid plate to prevent easy access). The service adviser says oh, we'll look into it, you can wait here or come back. So I get a ride back to work and they call an hour later saying its done. They said they put it up on the rack and ran it for 15 minutes and not leaks, so it was residual oil. I had to get another ride from work back to Toyota. I drive it to work and park it. I then drive home, park it in the driveway and notice there is another puddle of oil. I drive it back down there and they pull it inside again. They come out and say they are going to replace the oil o-ring on the oil filter canister. 45 minutes later the service manager comes out and says they ran it on the rack for 10 minutes and no leaks, we'll drive it around to the front and you're good to go. I wait another 10 minutes and the manager walks out and says its leaking again. Now they are going to replace the oil filter canister. SMFH.

oil probably just splashed onto the skid plate when draining. i don't think there is an actual leak.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Ehh. Ones that care won’t make this mistake.. but if you don’t put something right under the drain plug
Like a form a funnel, once it slows to a trickle the oil runs down the pan a bit then starts leaking onto the skid plate. Lube techs suck for this.. and I get stuck cleaning up their messes

You pay a premium for them to do the job correctly and get this instead . This is why I do most of my work myself to avoid stuff like this . Hopefully they didn’t over tighten things in the process or leave the cap off . I have read others have that happen to them .

I did the break in oil change and one at 5k miles myself. The truck was at 8600 miles and 12 months so I figured I’d get it out of the way for the freebie.

ANY semi educated mechanic (especially one that works at a toyota stealership and sells tacomas with front skid plates) should know about the oil pooling there.
Oh wait!! I said semi educated...
Oil rats are typically the lowest person on the ladder thus usually lacking any skill at all.
