This is my brand-spanking new cylinder head (which I've had too long to return). IMG_0019.jpgIMG_0020.jpg the hole more -or-less centered in the second picture is the problem- there was no hole like that in the old head so I have to come up with a way to seal this off. This is a 96 2wd 2.4l auto and the photos show the intake side of the head.
Suggestions and solutions would be gratefully accepted......thank you.

I would put a soft plug in it. (Also called water jacket plug or freeze plug) You need to accurately measure the hole and the soft plug. You probably want about .005" to.008" interference fit.

That is a opening for the Camshaft position sensor. The cylinder head is the same for the 2.4 as it is for the 2.7 engine if memory serves correctly.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this and reply, (for 'why' see my latest post...) . I very much appreciate the help.
    Excellent suggestion, thank you.
    correct, at least AFAIK.
um, I'm not quite following...._what_ Toyota route? My truck has a CPS, it's on drivers side under the alternator bracket. Do you mean Toyota might sell a 'plug' for this hole? My new head is not OEM from Toyota, it' s aftermarket.
Thanks for your input, BamaToy 1997.
Edit: I think somewhere I/we confused the _camshaft_ for the _crankshaft_ position sensor.: the photos in the post Beerpaysdabillz linked to appear, to me, to be a crank position sensor at least, it looks very similar to mine on the business end. ....I have a cam position sensor, it's at top of block on drivers' side, IIRC

If there is a sensor at the top of the BLOCK then it is not a camshaft sensor. The camshafts being in the HEAD would have to have the sensor located in the head as well. It reads directly off the reluctor pin on the camshaft. If you look at the below photo you will see on the cylinder head, slightly above the orange engine block, at an angle, an opening in the head, center. This is where the camshaft position sensor is located. In this photo it shows a plug inserted. If your engine is fired by a distributor, then you won't have a sensor located here, as it uses the distributor sensor to regulate timing for the ignition, and fuel.

thank you BamaToy1997 I stand corrected ( tho I did qualify my statement re my cam sensor w/ the disclaimer "IIRC" -knew I'd regret not double-checking correct nomenclature before posting, lol).
Where did that picture come from and do you happen to know the correct Toyota terminology for the plug? Better yet, where/how to obtain one? I spent quite some time on a (fruitless) Google search.

@BamaToy1997: duh I've just now noticed the "ASE Master Tech" header under your handle. Are you an MT for Toyota?

EDIT: after re-examining that picture....I would hazard a guess that this is YOUR custom built 2.7l.

    Amiright? "yes"=wow. "no"= I prob'ly shouldn't have asked!

LMAO. No, it isn't my build. Though I did build one identical if you dig through my build thread. Painted the block black.
Not sure what the plug would be called, but I am willing to bet you could call Toyota and find out.
