If I have the TRD Off-Road package what does this really entail, if the truck is not 4WD? I don't necessarily mean the specs (I could look that up and have) but what could you really do in this truck that you couldn't do in a normal pickup truck when off-road? You are still obviously limited by not being a 4WD

    Thanks

Shocks are different too on the OR... and some minor appearance stuff, plus Rugged Trails which are meh.

You didn't say, is it a PreRunner? Then it's 2wd. What year is it? Will indicate some option parts. & the number one TRD OR option is the rear locker, which can make a big difference off road.

IMO the biggest thing about why having TRD OR is worth it is that rear locker.

    I have a 4x4 off-road but personally I'd rather have a pre-runner off road.
I do not do serious enough off roading to require 4x4 but I do go shooting in the desert and I would like the peace of mind knowing I could PROBABLY get myself out of a pre-made dirt road if i get stuck in it.

however the 4x4 OR was selling super low in price so I ended up getting that instead.

 You go into the desert where you could get stuck, but would rather have a pre-runner?

Ive got an 06 trd off road pre runner and if all you are doing are fire trail dirt roads then the rear locker SHOULD be all you need. Ive gone though some soft sugar sand and not got stuck. BUT having 4x4 would give me much more peace of mind

So the reality is a regular 2wd truck is really only a 1wd truck. Power follows the path of least resistance. You see that all the time when one wheel spins while the one with traction just sits there. The locker gives you true 2wd and the ability to keep moving where a regular truck would be stuck.

The same thing is true of 4wd trucks without a locker, they are only 2wd, one in the front and one in the rear. I have the 4wd Off Road so with my locker I have 3 wheel drive. (Atrac adds an electronic locker simulator to the front wheels using the ABS system. So the truck is pretty close to 4wd)

why would I say "I have a 4x4 off road but would rather have a pre-runner off road"? what ELSE could I possibly be implying other than that a pre-runner is 4x2? how specific do I need to be?

This is exactly what a 4x4 nazi would say who has no open mind for the reasoning behind a 4x2 with a locker. Don't think "off-roading" as in rock crawling and climbing up mountains or boulders.

clearly you two did not read my post and understand the message behind it.
you do realize that when you go on an off-road pre-made dirt road that is as flat as an asphault road, you do NOT need 4x4, contrary to popular belief (yes I know its a shock!). rock crawling and driving on a dirt road are two different things. If god forbid, one rear wheel got in a soft patch of sand and spun, I'd be screwed without that rear locker.

now, dont get me wrong. Now that I got the 4x4, I'll definitely be doing some rock crawling and/or adventuring further than I previous had in mind.

You're from California I see. You absolutely bought the right a Tacoma. PreRunners are so cool, for all the reasons mentioned above and more. I bought the 4x4 TRD OR simply because I live in MN where 20-inch blizzards aren't uncommon at all.

    Umm calm yerself there.

Yes, I did understand your comments on the merits of the locker. I also understand you have a 4x4 OR , so I consider that the best of both worlds. You can fly in 2 wheel locked, and you can crawl in 4x4L. And you can get out of slippery grades with both.

Unless the weight if the front diff, or our inherent lift limitations have you second guessing, I was surprised at the comment that you would rather have a PreRunner.
    No offense meant.

Newbie question in a newbie question thread:

Can you turn on the rear locker in a pre runner TRD off road when ever or did toyota limit it to a certain MPH?

Great question. Dunno on the new ones, check your manual. I'm sure it can be defeated. With the right mods you can take a 4x4 OR and lock it in 2wd and low gear if you wanted to.

Your giving us CA peeps a bad name with all the threads your creating. Why don't you relax, read up on the 100's of threads that answer your questions instead of creating more threads.

On a scale of 1 to 10 how dumb are your threads?
