2023 TRD Off-Road 15k miles. It has pinged a little since day one in temps over 70-75 degrees. Always low rpm under slight load.

Now the interesting thing is that since I’ve gotten it tuned, it does it at lower ambient temperatures. It got up to 50-55 today and I noticed it.

Has anyone had a similar experience? And how bad is it actually for the engine in the long run?

You need to talk to the tuning group. Be ready to provide engine rpms, engine load and other information. Is there a possibility of running octane specific tune on a lower octane gas?

Just by ear. I can hear the typical rattling noise associated with spark knock always at the same rpm

No it’s not an octane specific tune

I was once told by a reputable tuner that the detonation you cannot hear is the one that will hurt your engine. That said, years back I blew up two Subaru EJ257 engines due to detonation that I never heard.
Like @Chew and @Vlady said, you should data log it to see if it is detonating and send it to the tuner.

    Interesting... 87 octane?

Yes. I was running 89 in the summer with the stock tune and was hoping I could run 87 year round once tuned. Maybe the winter blend is making it worse and it has nothing to do with being tuned

Makes no sense why these trucks ping the way they do. Well, the way SOME of them do.

I hear ya. This was my gripe with stock, early ovt, final ovt and post ovt tunes. The pinging was annoying in 6th.
I settled with kdmax. I use costco 87 and their tune is performing as expected. I've been holding up on spending money on OTT for quite some time.i already got burnt on tune shopping.
Most "performance" tunes want you to run high octane. You should reach out to their tuner.

To my knowledge, OTT tunes are not octane specific. I’m OTT tuned as well. That being said, these engines have a fairly high compression ratio and thrive on high octane. You are not doing yourself any favors running low octane fuel. I monitor my knock feedback and vlady has been kind enough to help me understand some aspects of this engine. Long story short, timing advance responds all way up to 95 - 96 octane or so. Particularly in high heat. Run premium fuel is all I can say. I run e25, or 25% e85 and the rest 93 which equals 95 - 96 octane and even then I still see some minor movement on the knock sensors under partial throttle, not under WOT though. Run premium fuel and avoid lugging the engine on low octane. Low rpm / high load, this is the worst.

Not to turn this into a tune vs tune conversation, but overall I much prefer this one to the KDMax 9.0 I had on my 2016. It eliminated the pinging that truck had, but I absolutely hated the shift points and jerkiness of it.

Totally fine. Agree, It is not about tunes, it is all about your driving environment and tuners should meet your expectations.
But pinging at 55°F shouldn't be happening.

I agree, and OTT may be more aggressive on the VVT adjustments vs others, I’m not sure. I did notice more movement after being tuned on 93 vs before on my knock sensors. It seems their dyno’s tend to show more HP vs others. I don’t believe max timing is changed though. Under partial throttle the most I have seen is 53 degrees advance, under WOT, 30 degrees.
