So mechanic arrived back in town and picked up the truck Sunday evening. Called this morning to let me know the problem: weak pins in the ignition coil connector. Something I wouldn't have thought of. He ordered the new connector which should arrive tomorrow (I'm in NW Alaska.. no roads to here). He sort of ragged on the software for that year of truck saying the computer shuts down the cylinder completely if it detects some problem, and sometimes shuts down other cylinders so you're only running on a couple - hence complete lack of power and ability to accelerate, if I followed completely what he was saying.

Glad he was able to find something and hope he gets it right this time.
As far as the reference to shutting down other cylinders, Toyota uses a 'waste spark' system. Essentially 2 companion cylinders fire at the same time for each power stroke, wasting the companion cylinders spark because there should be no fuel/air in that cylinder. I guess the thought is if there were any it would be burnt, and you would have less raw fuel emissions.
