i know there are a ton of these threads between here and toher boards, however i havent seen anyone do a reg cab conversion and was wondering what if anything is different. i know about the 4x4 trans, trans case, front diff and axles and all that. but is there anything different like the ecu or anything. found a trans and transfer csae for 300 bucks on craigspace but its for the 3.0

Also mine is a 2001 reg cab prerunner automatic, with crusie. i would like to retain this feature and dont really care about ADD or manual hubs either way. which ever one is easier, from what ive read the hubs are the way to go and everything is more or less bolt in basicaly. but like i said, havent seen someone with my setup do it. thanks.

Uhm, your sig says 2010 and you are inquiring about a 2001... which is it? That will be good info towards answering your questions.

Don't buy anything from a 3.0 truck, wrong side transfer case drop. If you bought a wrecked parts tacoma everything will swap. If you find a transfer case with manual hi/lo/4wd (AKA J-shifter) you won't have to worry about electrical. If you get a electric t case you will have some wiring to fuck with. Or harness swap, which is a big task. Any Tacoma auto 4wd trans from 95-04 will work. The 00 and prior are more likely to have the desired t case (j shifter).

    OP...
I am doing exactly what your planning, only difference is the SAS.
I have a Diamond axle and 3 link kit awaiting install.

For the trans/ T case, I have an A340F and Inch Worm case. No electric crap whatsoever.

Check out Scuba's build in the solid axle section.

    Good luck.

Yea I figured nothing from the 3.0s would work. Wad just say I g there was a he'll of a deal on one. So ANY 95-04 4x4 trans will bolt up? 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder? Or just the 4 cyl?
And definitely want a "j" t case. Not trying to do any wiring on a 14 yr old truck.

The bellhousings are different but you already got that on your current trans. Any auto and tcase 4wd from a Tacoma will work. 4Runner stuff will too but there are a lot electric cases and center diff models.

And you shouldnt pay more than about 500 for a trans+tcase total. These things arent exactly 'desirable.' They just work well and are all over the place. You should be able to find a tacoma tcase for well under 300.

I believe the tcase has to be from a auto trans vehicle. I think the bolt patterns are different. But someone correct me if I am wrong.

I did a 4wd swap in my 99 V6 Prerunner back in 07. Used a 00 4runner auto with a electric tcase. I wired the tcase first try and worked. Always did unless the power lead fell off my radio amp inside the cab which is annoying. I have to admit I am glad I am going back to a manual shifter.

yea, i recently sold a '01 4runner with the ADD and center diff lock, it was nice to have to not get out and lock it in and all that, but it was not as simple as just moving the "j" t case and being in 4WD and thats it. sometimes the ADD or diff would stick ...

Hi @josh843, there is a Tacoma World and TTORA regular @Ritchie, he has a killer 2003 single cab auto pre-runner he converted to 4wd with a solid front axle. It's one of the best builds I've ever seen. He would have tons of good info for you. Here are some photos of his truck:

The only hitch is that the trans has to match the engine type of the tcase. 23 spline for the v6 and 26 for the 4 cylinder. You could always mix and match couplers depending on what you get with each too.

My recommendation, dont do what they were saying. Its a waste of time and money. You dont need to build a geared case, the chain cases are fine and bolt on. If you want a 4wd truck just find a stock tacoma j-shifter.

Yea I'm not trying to go SAS. I just got a real good deal on this truck and want 4WD. O don't really "wheel" but I've been in plenty of situations where I needed 4WD and after seeing how easy it is to swap with these trucks its deg worth it for me to buy a parts trucks rather than sell this one and buy a 4WD truck.
