    It's more of a deterrence.

As rare as it is for an active shooter event, it is extremely rare to have such an event in a "hot" environment.... one where the majority of people are likely to be carrying, such as a police station, gun store, etc...

Fort Hood shooting? Gun-free zone except for the MPs... even "Safer" for the bogey than a typical city street. Virginia Tech.... same thing. Batman screening? Though Colorado has forgiving carry laws, Denver does not, and even for licensed carriers, the theater was off-limits.
Giffords? Granted, AZ is a state where any non-prohibited person may carry freely, but it was at a political event... security moderately tight for a member of congress, but not typically an event where you would expect to find a lot of armed people in attendance.

Like I said the CCP answer is not a solution. The average person can close with an armed indivual from 20 feet before he can aquire you as a target, aim and engage. Its hard to believe and I didnt before a few classes I took demonstrated that. That being said where the weapon is already drawn and firing it is dropped to 15 feet with a 45 degree off set of the firers weapon. I completly agree that people should commit and attack NO MATTER WHAT. All it takes is one person to close to striking distance and all weapons are useless, trained or not. Even more, once one person grabs their balls others will follow and it is ended. Chances are someone will be shot but that is some ONE not all. Plus beating the sit out of one of these guys would be bliss. So a gun is not nessacary to end it. However this is not to detract from my OP. Why is this happening. It is, obviously, a child of our society. How do we fix it. All pop culture has led us down this road

Being that this occured in a Sikh temple , and the men would be generally carrying kirpans , I wonder if there was an attempt to overwhelm the shooter

I mean they would all be armed and I have heard many times here that a knife is better than a gun under certain conditions

I agree completely on this being a societal issue and not a gun-availability issue. The gun just happens to be a more or less convenient method of acting out. Personally, if I were in a theater and through two separate doors entered one man with an AK47, and one man with a bottle of alcohol and a lighter... the one with the bottle would strike more terror into my mind. One of my greatest primal fears, far beyond being shot, is being burned.

But my point was that this does not happen in locations where people are expected to be carrying.

    Depending on the situation.

The advantage always goes to the one with the element of surprise.
    In this case, the shooter.

And being aware of the type of weapons carried, he could plan his attack accordingly and attempt to keep his distance.

all weapons are equal and useless once you have achieved a clinch

I'm only 33, and I have seen 15% interest. On my credit cards, student loans, and car payments. Don't recall any of my savings accounts ever having more than about 3% interest though.

    He's talking about MORTGAGE RATES!

Highest I've ever seen on a savings account was around 6% or so, but a 15% mortgage rate?

In 1981, our mortgage interest rates were 16.6%
    Inflation rate was 10.35%
Median price of a "used" home was $66k.

The payment on that house, assuming no down payment, would have been $919/month, not including property taxes or PMI.
At the end of the 30 year loan, you would have paid $330k for that home.

Average income was $21k. That's $1750/mo... deduct for taxes and social security.... can you afford $920 for a mortgage?

That payment goes up to $988 if you impound 1.25% property tax and 0.5% PMI.

Today, that same $988 can fund the mortgage on a home that costs $177k.

Just to clarify.... not the case.

Women and children were present, but early reports were of multiple attackers and possible hostages.
That was not the case. The women and children were hiding in closets.

Six dead plug the gunman. Killed by the 2nd cop to respond.

there is gun crime everywhere.... homocides, etc.... I dont think that gun violence has changed much in that it's always occurred.... it's just the media is emphasizing certain incidences.

    Not surprising.

A lot of nutcases don't know or care of the difference between the dozen or so religions that wear headgear and beards.
Those nutcases also give American patriots a bad name.
