Driving home today, 530ish, nice sunny day...at least by calgary standards, started on the on ramp and kaboom! Loud exsplosion , I looked at my wife to be sure be she was ok thinking someone just shot at us. She was fine, I did a selfcheck, I'm ok, we both start looking around, and finally see the sun roof glass looks like the photo. Wtf? We started brushing the small glass flakes off our shoulders. And tried to figure out what happend.

I saw no rock, or anything flying at us, unless something came from out of my vision, I would have saw it. We heardd no secondary impact, no impacts on anything else.

Once we got home I took video of it...here.
    https://youtu.be/DKLuDvmhst0

Notice the glass is pushed up a bit? Doesn't look like an impact to me. I did do a search and a few others have had the same thing happen. Of course everything is closed so have to wait until tomorrow. Toyota dealer first....see what they do. Sure seams like a defect to me.

The oddest shyt happens to me....unreal.

Just curious. Were you driving with the sunshade closed then opened it? I am thinking maybe the warm air on the cold glass caused this to happen.

Same thing happened to my wife's Civic a couple of years ago. The Honda dealer denied any defect.

I will be having my sunroof tinted right away in case this happens to me. That way no glass can come down and fet in anyone's eyes!

Your post history mentioned you bought it used, eh? Sunroofs can explode if tinted. Good tint shops won’t tint a sunroof.

Why would a sunroof explode from being tinted?

I believe my tint guy mentioned that the tinted sunroof will absorb more heat and be more likely to crack. He’s done over half of the TW trucks in my city so I trust him. He knows his stuff.

I guess it depends on the tint they use. The Ceramic tint actually keeps the heat out.

Agreed.... but tint on the inside means light travels through the glass, hits the tint, then either deposits in the tint or doubles back. What makes it through the tint defines the tint percent. What gets deposited on the way in and out is converts to residual heat in the glass.

I’m not saying tint will or won’t cause glass explosion, only that it tends to heat the glass more than no tint.

I have my sunroof tinted with 3M Crystalline. It rejects up to ~97% of IR light and up to ~60% solar. Due to those specs, I felt comfortable tinting it.
