My 2005 has 255,000 miles on it and never had a head gasket problem. I wouldn't say they all fail.

Mine has 140k miles (222 km) and it's fine now, but I always worry about it, if it goes I'll loose a lot of value in the words quality, dependability, and reliability for Toyota.

This is a 3,000 plus dollar job here.

I'd like to apologize to the OP for my comments. I was pissed about something else when I wrote the post. That's no excuse, again I apologize. I normally don't do that.

The idea is to take responsibility for something that One knows they are responsible for.
And yes, the "Undercoating" recall was just done, as well was the "leaf spring" recall, only last month, when the truck l was over warranty and 11 years old. So if no recall is put out for the head gasket, which I understand would be a Massive cost to the Corp., then at least do something for the ones that do go...much too early than they should.
I do live in a part of the world where it can be -40 degrees for 3 months of the year, so I buy quality, dependable Toyota vehicles. Me, my wife or my kids could be out in the winter, hours from cel service and help, where this could let go, leaving us stranded, frozen and definitely in a life or death situation. That's why it can be compared to fire protection.
It'll get fixed, I'll only ever buy a Toyota as far as I can see, they'll hear from me and hopefully help out.
I merely put this thread out to notify others that "another head gasket failure in an '06 has happened, just like many others".
It blows for all who've gone through, after paying big bucks for the rig in the first place.

Good thread, I was plagued by headgasket issues in a sr5 88 v6 first year product. They should figure out a way to insulate early model buyers from this.

I thought the notorious 3VZ-E V6 head gasket issues were covered back in the day. Though they took forever to do it and didn't go out of their way to let anyone know about it.

I know the issue with the 3.0 V6 was not head gaskets, my point was sudden engine failure due to an issue Toyota is aware of, can be very dangerous!

Anyway, this is what your oil looks like when a dealership machines your heads (which should never be done on these engines), fails to clean properly, leaving metal shavings in your engine and also failing to install the guides properly and the break apart.

You are right, something stinks! I have been in a couple civil cases the shortest was settled in 3 years! I just want my truck back. As, is, it can not be started without catastrophic engine failure. I made an offer today, I offered to pay another dealership the cost to tare down the engine up front to prove what happened. If after over $2,000 was spent at my cost, if it turns out there was no error I just pay the bill. But, if an error was found, Northshore Toyota in Covington, LA would pay the bill and ship me a brand new crated 1GR-FE and I install myself.

They REFUSED the offer. So if there was no fault and they were completely confident in their workmanship, they would have nothing to lose! So, yah, in my case... Well, I think I have a case for sure now!

OP I feel your pain. Except my pain was with my 2001 Ford Ranger. When I read the posts on this thread it reminded me of the stuff I went through.

My Ranger only made it to 147,000 miles. I drove it gently, had all routine maintenance performed and yet the head gasket finally blew.

My truck was always outside and was my daily driver. I took it to 2 separate mechanics over a 6 month period and they told me the same thing. I also found out that cars that are not "garaged" should have the coolant flushed once a year because the ethylene glycol can break down and turn acidic. This causes mayhem in Fords because seals, gaskets and anything else that comes into contact with coolant just corrodes.

One mechanic suggested using Blue Devil because it stops leaks in coolant systems. I did this and it gave me half a year of time. Maybe it is the worst thing to do, but maybe it will work for you.

I ended up trading it in. First time ever that I traded a car in. I didn't get much for it, but it was becoming a $6,000++ problem. Essentially I considered it "mechanically totaled". It's the first car that ever did this to me.

I found out that there were issues that Ford knew about but chose not to take care of it's loyal customer base. Needless to say my next truck was not a Ford.

I look around at dealerships on the web and notice that more often than not there are Fords on those low tier used car lots that have mileage either approaching 150,000 miles or right at 150,000 miles. There seems to be something about this 150,000 mile mark with Fords.

I hope this long story helps you out somehow, but this has been my recent experience.

Why shouldn't the heads be machined?

That is due to an incompetent machine shop. Not because of machined heads.

I hate Northshore Toyota. They are notoriously cheap and unwilling to work with anyone. It comes from the owner on downward.

Apples and oranges. Its ridiculous to expect a company to replace an engine after 11 years of use. Its a wear item. People that think there is a design flaw in a product that lasted 11 years drive me nuts. 90% of the population replace their cars every 4 to 6 years. Maybe i should have called Toyota and whined my ass off when I had to replace the head gasket on my sons 94 Yota 4x4. :annoyed:

So to anyone who has done this. I plan to replace hoses and water pump. I have 170k miles. Should I go ahead and replace the timing chain too since it has to be taken off anyway?

I know they would just normally let it lay and not remove it from the crank pulley, but I think I'd like to chip in the little extra and get it done. Or does the oil pan have to be removed as well?

Confirmed head gasket failed. That's at 90,650 miles. $3700.
Dealer said it was "highly unlikely" when I brought it in. He did a little research and then agreed that there seems to be a problem with the 05 and early 06, that "you aren't alone in this."

You could call corporate and politely let them know that you are very upset that your truck didn't even make it to 100k on the known to be faulty oem head gasket. Explain to them that the early 1gr-fe engines do not have the updated head gasket part number... see what they say. Sometimes they will help you out a little.
