While the CJ's were good vehicles. They were Never comparable to the Military Jeeps. Not even close.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
They had all the same running gear, axles, transmissions in them as the CJ's did. They didn't have all the military gear added to them though obviously. I am referring to the old CJ2A's, CJ3A, and CJ3B, also early CJ5 models when the military Jeep of the time was the M38A1 when I say CJ. Not the newer CJ5's, 7's and 8 from AMC. They only shared roots with the original Army Jeep in a sense that they were basic, bare bones, simple, easy to work on 4x4's but were still tough and nimble off road like the military Jeep was.

We Tacoma owners would like to have had the 4Runner version of the 4.0 for the last five years. Nearly 40 more hp would be welcome along with better economy. But no. Toyota could still sell nearly all the Tacomas they were willing to make withthe older version and make more money. They do just what they have to n staying ahead of the co petition. If the competition does nothing, they do only what they have to do to increase market share and profit with as little financial committment as possible. That's no different then any corporation who first, wants to make as much profit as possible and stay ahead of the competition. Ahead, but not too far ahead.

The " no diesel" decision makes sense......to them. Why offer three engines when they only need to move one from another line to get the job done. Do you think we who are weaned on quality Toyotas are going to abandon them to a truck with a diesel we can take to a repair shop more often. Heck no. Toyota knows it.

Sounds like the typical life of an old Jeep 4.0. Mine is at 231K with only oil changes and a valve cover gasket. That is the motor they need to bring back.
