You hooked your grab hooks in wrong. The point of the hook does not go into a chain link, rather, the whole link should fit into the slot of the grab hook. Luckily, it appears as though you escaped any damage or injury because of it though.

Also prevents having to take a hammer to unjam the chain..

Also be surprised with the amount of traction these trucks have the things they can pull!

How does the chain not slip through the grab hook when you don't secure it?

The other links prevent it from sliding.

I have YET to bend a 3/8 chain with the Taco...however for heavy work like that I use the Military Power Wagon, when those pieces break, they are much easier to fix. However, that stump looks like it would have come out with a mattock. A high lift jack used as a come-a-long is also a very good technique and we don't risk expensive driveline bits and pieces. The HF 1 ton come-a-longs are good, single use tools and should be treated as disposable.

I have tried the stump grinding routine with a rented grinder and found it to be a great success. When I built my shop, I brought in a D6 Dozer and a big 4x4 backhoe, and had giant bonfires for months trying to get the stumps to burn.

Thanks for the advice on stump pulling. I had never done it before so I guess I got lucky as had no problems. I did have to put the truck in 4wd/low to get traction. My son and I tried for over an hour to get out that stump with hand tools. It was an old YEW bush and they are known for deep tap roots. After pulling it out I saw that the stump simply separated from the roots and they remained in the ground. Luckily, there was enough of a hole to put in a new and different type of bush.

I got the chain, hitch receiver, pin, and ball at wally world. The whole setup cost less than $ 40 and saved a ton of work. I will keep the setup in the truck for just in case when I go out on dirt logging roads in northern new england for fly fishing.

Leave the tree 6' tall, use a come along from top of trunk, mattock the roots out!
    Easy-peasy, down comes the tree!

I've taken a lot of trees down this way, and the root ball's gone when I'm done!

yes like others said the chain goes into the grab hook. Make sure when you pull the chain straight it makes a straight line if not flip the hook.

I like a 9 tined fork for chips, and you miss understand...once the stumps were dug out and piled up, it took a long time for them to dry out enough to burn in a bonfire...

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Using a tow ball as a hook isn't a good idea.

True. Better to use something like this.
And toss another length of chain over your working chain to help prevent it coming back if it fails
