I'll keep it short, I've searched relentlessly on this issue but I want to ask about my specific situation. I understand these trannys are loud by nature, but how loud is too loud? If i can ever figure out my login password for my account/email i signed up with, I'll post a vid once i'm home as well.

    Noises are as follows:
Neutral - loud, noticeable whirring sound. Consistant, almost like a metallic electric motor sound. When clutched in, the noise has a distinct turbine-slowing-down sound (noise dissipates as the transmission internals are disengaged from the engine crank and stops once the internals do). Loud enough to overpower the engine sounds and low-volume radio.

1st, 2nd, 3rd - loud whining sound as the gears speed up, consistant with engine rpm's. Higher pitched, short chirp as the clutch is engaged and the engine rpm's fall between shifts.

4th - no whining, but there is a driveline-chatter sound, even at 2+k rpm. Will be lubricating U-joints to attempt to fix this.

5th - May have a slight whine, I don't really recall one but i'm mostly concerned with the 1-3 gears.

I've checked the fluid, it is clean/clear and filled to spec. The trans doesn't necessarily shift poorly, but it might be worth noting - i've noticed the gears will shift flawlessly and so smooth you don't even know i shifted, AS long as it is right on the dot +/- with Toyota's shift points and my clutch-in time is just right. It's almost as if the synchro's are worn, and the trans much prefers proper rev-matching with shifts.

Sound like i have major issues, or just a typical W59? Had this particular truck for 2 months, first 5spd Tacoma, and I'm not first-hand familiar with how these trannys typically behave.

FYI, truck is a 2003 2.4 5 lug, has 120,500 on it, supposedly new clutch about 5-10k ago. Lady before me was elderly and not exactly an experienced 5 speed operator.

I too have this noise. Bought truck from an elderly woman with 34k on it and it had that same whine. Now at 65k it is still present. Drained fluid at 50k and it was yellow and clear with little to almost nothing on drown plug. It now has redline synthetic in it which made no difference. What is this noise? Sounds like classic input shaft bearing noise. But why? The input shaft bearing is hard to hurt even if u beat the transmission.
