It wasn't even a hill it was just a slight uphill redlight and I was rolling slowly back off the brake. Again iMT was off so may it's all tied to that feature?

Maybe different on the 4th gen as peak torque hits at 2k rpm vs 4K

I'm guessing it is tied to some sort of inclinometer so may not kick on on slight grades? I doubt it would be tied to iMT, but I've only tried iMT briefly a couple of times, didn't notice any difference and turned it off.

Update: Tested it on my driveway (slight incline). It's there. Works without iMT. It only holds for a couple of seconds though so if you don't get moving forward in that time frame it may seem like it isn't working.

You'll know if the engine bogs on the ascent or if you want to use engine braking on the descent. With iMT on it will be as simple as depressing the clutch, moving into a lower gear, and releasing the clutch. The first thing you'd probably want to do is just depress and release the clutch while sitting still in the lot to get the muscle memory of its travel length. Then find out where it start to "bite".

This 4th gen has loads more down-low torque, so if you were in 4th in your 3rd gen I would think this 4th gen would only need to be in 5th gear.

I have a 2nd gen stick but what I can add is that the only time I dislike a stick shift is in heavy traffic. If I lived in LA I wouldn't want one lol as far as driving it , after a couple weeks you'll know the vehicle and clutch better and it will be fine. Always takes me a couple weeks "getting to know the vehicle" before I feel good with it. I've had 7 stick vehicles and I also drive stick semi trucks although those are entirely different beasts. (No gear synchronizers)

Alright, I did it. Signed the papers today, picking up later this week so if a mistake was made we are past that point now anyhow.

Now I need to find some quiet uphill roads close to my place.. lol

Thanks! lol well let's just see how pathetic my driving will be for the first few weeks. I have a feeling I am going to gain an appreciation and realization for how many roads in my city are uphill in the coming days.

Its a feature, not a bug. Only reason Im intersted in the Tacoma lineup is the manual, and glad the 4th gen is keeping it even if its not the top trim anymore (sad).

I once rolled down the driver's side window, while turning left, while lighting a cigarette, while shifting, while taking off my hat in my old first gen 4Runner. And did it smooth as ice. My wife in the passenger seat was like, "How...?"

Learned to drive stick in that 4Runner on back country roads out in East Texas. Lot's has changed since then, lot's has stayed the same. One thing for sure, quitting smoking was the best thing I ever did. Selling that 4Runner wasn't.

I love it! Allegedly my brother-in-law and I were driving down from rafting the Truckee in his old manual T-100. He worked the clutch while I did the steering and shifting because he needed two hands to light a bowl. It wasn’t until we were flagged down by a road crew that we realized we were dragging a traffic cone that had wedged itself in the front suspension somehow. 20+ years of common sense has that sort of thing in the past, but the old stories are still fun to tell.

@OP, if you want it, then just go for it.

I enjoyed my time driving manual and now I'm in an auto. Different experiences and each have their pro and cons. I like off roading in my auto more, but if I had a turbo, I'd be very tempted to hop back in a manual again. I'm sure you'll be fine DD-ing it.

Picking it up tomorrow! Will probably use iMT to get home and then find some hills to practice on.

Kind of bummed that the 4th gen doesn't have a handbrake like the 3rd gen, that is how I learned hill starts in the past so will be interesting without one.

I’ve owned more sticks than autos, but mostly sports cars, aside from a couple TJ’s. The only problem I have with them is that I also enjoy drinking my coffee when I’m dropping my son off at school.

The long-ish throws will become second nature, and eventually you’ll hardly even realize that you’re shifting it yourself. Very sublime, and overall much more rewarding than a slushbox.

    Nice choice & good luck.

You'll be fine, after a full day of driving you'll get most of it sorted out and fine tune your technique along the way.

I've got 230K miles on an Audi A4 6mt (still on the original clutch)
93K miles on a '79 RX-7 (Replacement clutch in a box in my shop for when the time comes) and 33K on the '21 Taco AC 6mt.
Standard transmissions are ..well...the standard! ;-)

    ENJOY your new Taco 6MT!

I love my 2017 MT transmission, but reverse is geared to high. I think it buttery smooth and fun to drive. I have only owned two AT cars that was mine (not wifey, etc..). Driving a MT is basically "automatic"
for me. I will admit I am more rural area, so traffic is not a factor for me. If I was in bumper to bumper on a daily commute, I may think differently. Of course, I lived in Seattle for three plus years driving my MT 2004 Civic, but was younger then and loved to wind up the engine thinking I was badass racer boy. Overall to end my ramble, I do recommend the MT in the Tacoma's

I only tow a boat a few times a year, so I don’t get the practice I need to do it well with my MT.
Having an auto, or (ironically) towing nor often might alleviate the problem. Or, I can just launch and load the boat early enough in the morning that no one is watching.
For the other 99.9% of my driving, the MT is way more fun.
