Shackles are like the nipple rings of the 4x world.

I understand you want to leave them on but why??

    For the cool factor ??

Then it is nice where I live I can forget the truck is outside running after getting distracted for Hours.

Not having to worry about things get stolen recovery gear is out of the weather.

Simple matter to change the threads to the size you want and install your longer hardware and hang pad locks on.

The downside is anything locked has to be worth money making it a target

The first time you go to use a shackle and that lock is bound up you are gonna be unhappy. Locks, like any mechanical device, need to be exercised or they tend to get stuck. If you use some sort of lube it attracts dust which makes it worse.

The last few times I've needed to use my shackles I wasn't in the mood to deal with any antitheft protection, be it a lock, a weld, a zip tie, a piece of baling wire or even just super tight. Once I was up to my knees in mud and very happy I had the quick disconnect style. If someone wants to steal one, I've got like 6 more in the truck and they need it more than me apparently, karma's a bitch.

So just so everyone is on the same page here. DO NOT EVER REPLACE A SHACKLE PIN WITH SOME RANDOM BOLT FROM INTERWEBS. Shackles are a loaded rate piece of rigging equipment.

I was saying the same as @Juforrest that the locking pin is not a suitable replacement for the shackle pin

Cool factor maybe lol.... hitting 35 maybe mid life crisis.

I have experienced unexpected events where having a recovery point would of helped at that time.

Now living in LA to many shitheads that look for stuff to steal that may have no use for them.

It would be nice to have best of both worlds.

I cant justify spending 45$ on a lock designed for shackles, and if i cannot make something for less then so be it.

I see alot of creativity out there, just wanted to know if anyone has came across, built, or purchased something I was asking.

I keep all my recovery gear in the back of the truck ready to go in a dedicated bag, out of site, out of mind.

Your not going to stop the thief out looking to steal hardware and other Truck goodies they will have the assorted tools to do so why worry about Shackles when you can steal the bumper just as fast.

Just discourage the casual person who walks up to the truck tries to turn them loose by hand and can`t.

In those "unexpected events where having a recovery point would of helped at that time" how urgent was the need to use the shackle? 5 seconds to tragedy? 30 seconds? 5 minutes?

I keep my shackles under the back seat. I can probably get it out and installed on (including what it's attaching to my truck) in the same time you can remove and re-install. Maybe 30 seconds.

So how urgent is the need?

Vehicle off the road in a embankment where accessing the vehicle was unsafe. And the tow truck had a hard time getting access to the factory tow point. Things can happen anytime and I always like to be prepared

do you keep straps attached to the shackles, since that will be quicker and safer with less effect on the vehicle?

    OP,

Typically, I have noticed that TacomaWorld members will give you 9 responses out of 10 that are almost useless. They will not read your entire post or try to understand the premise of your concern. They just say idiotic things or ideas that make sense to them, most times insulting the OP just for a laugh.

Regarding theft: Just remember, the main things you should keep in mind is not trying to make it “theft proof” or impossible, you want to make it improbable or just time-consuming and a lot of work for them up get at it. The more trouble they have the greater the likelihood they will give your vehicle or “item” a pass. It also helps up not leave a lot of stuff inside your truck that looks valuable to the thief. Make it look boring and “nothing to see here.”

For instance, the average thief looks for easy “snatch and grab” opportunities, and will quickly pass if an items presents too much time, special tools, complication, and especially, draws too much attention.

For your application, that might mean an non-standard bolt head, lock (I’ve done this with success, just packed it with grease and taped it up, never an issue), or some other method of securement that causes them delay or concern.

This philosophy has worked well for me for over 30 years, and I have parked my vehicles in some high theft areas with good results over those years.

    Good luck.

Definitely the best response yet. Thank you for clearing the air for some.

I completely understand how the interwebz work on these forums. I was a active 10 year member on dezertrangers before I sold my prerunner, and those guys were dick lol.

People stray so far from the topic it's sometimes comical.

My question was pretty simple. Are there any locking shackles in the world besides the one I've seen?

Or am I stupid for thinking? If answering this wont bother me at all lol

Quarantine got me this bored enough to create this thread.
But it looks like everyone here is also suffering from this quarantine boredom enough to chime in.

    Needless to say

    Tacoma's rule :burnrubber:

Inexpensive shackles left on for when I need recovery points for minor situations in a hurry (and still look cool). Good shackles in my recovery kit with straps and snatch blocks aren't exposed to theft nor the elements and are always ready for when the situation is critical.
