Absolutely locking the locks is a must common sense and the Killswitch is also a must I’ve had it on all my vehicles

Best anti theft I know of. I leave the truck completely unlocked w/ keys in the ignition half the time and no problems. I do also live in New Hampshire though

I live in a city in So.Cal. which has a very responsive Police force. A year ago I called-in a suspicious vehicle which was parked across the street from my house in the middle of the night and in under five minutes two Officers were there and had the occupants outside on the curb, which saved me from running around my neighborhood in my Leopard Print Speedo. The same Police Department recently made news when they busted a ring of Cat Converter thieves because a resident heard some strange noises late one night and called them to report it.

As for my Taco, it's heavily insured and if it's stolen can be replaced very quickly. A couple of my other vehicles are custom and/or classics and can't be so easily replaced so two of them live inside my secured garage, the others are outside but are locked and insured.

It also pays to get on really good terms with your neighbors and with the people who walk Dogs in your neighborhood. I know everyone within sight of my house and they all know who should and shouldn't be around when I'm not there. My Pest Control guy didn't latch my gate properly once and it swung-open after he left. Within an hour of the Pest guy leaving I got a text from the girl who lives across the street and a phone call from a guy who walks his dog past my house daily and knows that my gates are never open when I'm not home.

I have had a vehicle stolen in the past (when I lived in a different part of So.Cal.) and following that went full-retard on securing, alarming, locking, etc. to make sure that it never happens again. But after a while I realized all that effort was taking away from a lot of my quality of life and eventually returned to a more 'normal' sense of security. Yes I have an alarm and motion lights on my house but if someone wants something bad enough, they're probably going to get it.

There are urban coons too. Fortunately the yotes have been thinning the herd lately.

OP is right - There is no substitute for common (or should I say "horse"?) sense!

I like his comments about "being watched" - and want to add -especially when on vacation. Have had some incidents in that regard in the past....

Same here. Unlocked and keys are in the ignition 99% of the time. Of course unless I'm in Manch or Nashua, then I might remove the keys

we have had an issue with guys coming out in the middle of the night in unmarked tow trucks, just hooking up and going...not targeting anything specific, but just ganking anything that they can. Also, our neighborhood is known as a "dump off" area for stolen cars. Pretty much on a weekly basis, some new car is left on the little road that enters our circle...the cops are out all of the time towing these cars away.

personally, i - like the OP - always live with the mindset that someone is scheming to nab my stuff...and I also lock and beep the car at all times. No tech is left in, or evident, in the car at any time. Cords are wrapped up and tucked away...

I can't believe how many times I stop for gas, or am going to the store, and I see cars in a spot with the engine on and running, windows down, and no one inside. People are so ignorant...

Appalling, really. I mean, you do drive a voodoo blue tacoma so I guess I should have seen this coming.

Scanning your key fob from outside and stealing your vehicle is a very real technique.

A simple small sheet of aluminum foil wrapped around your fob prevents the same thing. No need to buy a fancy faraday bag.

Unless you wrap it really well you will still "leak" signal plus who wants to dicker around with foil when you need the FOB to perform? Might as well stick it under a tin foil hat for easy access.

Lock the doors and park off street are things that in my neighborhood keep your vehicle most safe. we have a facebook neighborhood crimewatch group and you would not believe how many times security videos are posted of people, teenagers included walking by cars trying the door handles to see if its unlocked. if its open they will take anything they might like to have.

I park behind my house and have a bright LED motion light covering the area. You want lights because back things happen under the cover of dark.
