When I picked up my '18 SR-5, the salesman offered to sell me some type of security/anti-theft system. He stated that if I didn't purchase it now, it would be locked out and can never be activated. What is this?

It's most likely the KARR anti-theft system that Toyota uses (Honda does too I believe). It's just a standard anti-theft system that disengages the starter if someone attempts to start the truck without deactivating it appropriately with the keychain beeper.

That whole "if you don't do it now you'll never be able to do it" spiel is just a sales tactic to try and get you to buy it on the spot for the outrageous markup they'll no doubt put on it. They probably have it on all the new vehicles on their lot already, and if a buyer doesn't want it then they remove it before giving you the truck. You can always get your own aftermarket system installed later if you want.

Another member had the same offer- check out how crappy of a installation the dealer did- that was before he bought the truck, so you should check to see if they did this to yours too:

Next to the hood release is a small connector that looks like it might be an OBD connector. He stuck a plastic piece in there that blocks access to the plug and can't be removed.

It's a high margin ignition kill switch many dealers add on for easy profit.

Good thing they didn't try to say it's required.

Absolute disgusting tactic, that hood release sensor works for the remote starter as well.

You'll be fine and the truck has a chip key and factory alarm that works fine.

When/if you get a survey, reflect his tactics in it. The survey hurts the salesman.

They offered me something like this on my truck when I was purchasing it. Said they would even throw in labor for free if I financed it at 2K extra (but but but, it would only raise my monthly payment by $20!). Googled the same system with installation real fast in the finance office and saw it installed with labor for $300. Showed the guy and then laughed when he said it must be a scam, no way it could be that cheap.

So how do I access the OBD connector now that it's got a plastic plug in it and what is the button on the bottom?
