Antlers Shed Hunting

They’re starting to drop here.

 

Four for the year so far

 

Pulled cameras today and antlers are hitting the ground, now we just gotta wait for the snow to melt.

 

First brownies of the year this weekend. Always awesome to pick up a set from a buck you've been following

 

My buddy and I went on our first shed hunt for the year and found 4.

 

That small one is pretty cool !

 

My buddy and I walked about 6 miles today and this is all we found. We’re staying out of our best spots until my buddies son comes home on the 14th.

 

The antler on the right looks like he's a fighter!

 

It’s actually an old one from last year, it’s been chewed on a little bit.

 

I took another walk today and found 3 more little ones.

 

Went out with my buddy and his son this morning and we found 14 which puts us at 28 for the year. Was somewhat disappointed in a few areas that we hadn’t been in yet.

 

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.....

 

The elk are finally dropping in my area. Found a few Saturday. The heavy 6 makes three years I've found from the same bull.

 

Ended up matching that heavy 6 up plus a deer shed. Not a bad haul for the weekend

 

Zero sheds to be found in these parts

 

I got lazy and waited too long to get out. Did a few miles today in a new area and it wasn’t what I thought. Super flooded but I thought I saw good sign in the muddy area but I think it was just hogs. Plenty of areas torn up and eventually I walked up on a group of them. I had to see how close I could get for a pic before continuing. No sheds.

Fairly new hunter here, looking to learn a little more. When do deer typically start dropping sheds? I know that will obviously be different regionally, but x-amount of months before/after rut?

 

I’m in West Central Illinois and I usually start to do a little looking around the first of February. I gradually increase my activity as time goes on and really start pounding the ground around the first of March and will continue looking through mushroom season which typically ends around the first week of May. Here’s some shed’s that I’ve found over the years.
