Good advice. I bought a motorcycle a few years ago and started reading in the forums about various catastrophic problems including crankshafts breaking in half(!). I road in fear for a few months until I got real and just enjoyed it. Never, ever had a problem with it that I didn't cause.

I recently (really recently) traded in my 2011 Silverado LT Z71 4x4 extra-cab with 63k miles on it. It was a very comfortable truck to drive and the tow package, especially the way it changed the transmission shift points, made pulling my small camper better than my previous 2003 F250!

The only real negative to me was the way they treated the frames on the Chevy's. Sticky waxy stuff that would rub right off and then rust. I also started to see some very slight waves forming over the passenger side rear wheel well and I convinced myself that it was the beginnings of a never-ending rust problem.

So, I was ready to downsize as my kids are off to college. We only camp a few times a year and always within a 2 or 3 hour drive from home. I specifically went looking for a 2015 Tacoma with Access Cab, Towing package and low miles. The one I got is Barcelona Red with TRD Off Road. I love it, and they gave me a really good chunk of dough for the Silverado.

I was getting sick of my civic (bought it new in 2006). Great car, but I get mulch every spring, and owning a fixer up house, I was always trying to stuff things into the civic or my wife's CR-V.
We use the CR-V as our main family car. I found myself only having my daughter in the civic once or twice a month if I had to pick her up from school, so I figured having her booster in a Regular Cab Sierra once it a while for short periods of time would be ok. Once I checked out the Access Cab Tacoma, and had her hop into the back and check out the jump seats, I could see she really liked it back there, and I knew it would be safer for her to sit back there vs. the front seat of a full size Sierra. That was pretty much the main deciding factor. Now that she has her little Access Cab area, we've been taking the Tacoma all over the place:)

I traded a 14 silverado v8 crew for my tacoma, was getting tired of trying to park it in DC after moving from OK. I got a good deal when I bought it, and still lost my ass trading it in a year later. It was an ok truck, they just don't hold their value. If I ever get another full size, it'll be used lol. Even upside down I'll catch up to depreciation on my tacoma. Pretty difficult with american trucks.

I had a 2015 GMC 1500 SLT Z71 crew cab with regular bed (~6.5') that I traded in on a 2017 TRD OR DCLB in Dec 2016. I had the 5.3 V8 with the 6 speed. Put about 48,000 miles on it from Jan 15-Dec 16. If I had gotten it with the 6.2 V8, I probably would have kept it. I do miss some of the features on my GMC, but I like my current truck, just brought it in today for it's 10,000 mile service ( I have 9,630 miles on it) and no transmission TSB for me or low transmission fluid.

I, too, traded my 2011 Silverado 5.3L (2-stroke edition as I called it - burned as much oil as gas) on my 2017 Tacoma on October 10, 2016. I literally destroyed half my T-shirt inventory with that sticky crap they put on the frame. Every time I did anything to that truck, I would get that crap all over me. Drove my wife nuts washing clothes.

It was, honestly, a good solid truck for the most part but where I was traveling it was a true pain in the arse to park (felt very wide), the mpg was horrible (big tires, my fault) and the oil burning issue (burned an entire quart one time in 120 miles pulling my boat) and I also thought that 6 speed trans was goofy until I got my Tacoma. I just got tired of it and wanted to downsize.

Yeah, I wish I had it back some days. Other days, I kinda wonder if I would have been happier with a Colorado.

The wax crap on the frame and especially the oil burning would drive me crazy!

Had a bit of the Chevy shake (do some reading on that), but they re-torqued the frame and it mostly went away. It's true the transmission shifts a bit like I've read the Tacoma does, but was much better after the TSB. I did like the bells and whistles it came with. Mine was a LT with the All-Star and Plus packages on it so it had the power pedals, seats, rear window, plus, plus, plus on it. Just ended up being too big for me.

The chevy/GMC shake seemed to be the biggest complaint out there. I read a few times where someone would comment how their grandfathers had a chevy, their dad had a chevy, and this was their 4th and last since GM is hadn't come up with a fix for the 2014/2015/2016 vibration. Lots of Youtube videos about it. Some people got it straightened out. Sounds like you mostly did. Your Silverado certainly sounds like it was pretty loaded. It had to be pretty huge too.

I had a new 14 Silverado Double Cab Z71 for all of 4 months before jumping back to a Tacoma (my 15 though).

if i wanted a fullsize it would have been a sierra i have had a 99 4.3, 2000 6.0, 2001 5.3, and 2007 6.0. I wanted a mid size there is only one option in my opinion at that point. to me this is an apples to oranges comparison. As for the new DI VVT 4.3l i can tell you for sure the only thing shared is displacement. i have had 4 - S-series trucks 3 had the 4.3l its a torquey little v6 since it was basically a gen 1 350 minus 2 cylinders but they tend to leak oil, have intake gasket and rear main seal issues. other than than that the vortec v6 is a dead reliable v6. the Ecotec v6 makes almost as much power as my 01 5.3 sierra made that's impressive. the issue with having a 4.3 sierra/silverado is when you go to resell it you are going to have a hard time because people in the know want the 5.3 or 6.2 because LSx/LTx is life. Ecotec for people like me is a Cobalt motor lol

I actually bought a 2016 Sport A/c after trading the same truck only 2011 which wass a good truck. I hate my 2016 so I go to federal court on next Tuesday to get my money back. In the mean while I bought a 2015 GMC Sierra which has the 5.3 v8 it is better than the Taco in all respects
even the MPG is better along with faster and much stronger and the cab noise is around 62 db instead of the loud 89 db average in the 2016 Taco.

Hate to pour water on this thread -But I just did the opposite and ditched my 2012 tacoma for a 2017 silverado crew cab z71...the seats on the tacoma were killing my back !! the silverado is like driving a cadillac in comparison...it has a REAL locking rear diff (eaton) and an auxilliary tranny cooler which the tundra does NOT have...We'll see how it does for 3 yrs...no more tacoma or tundra for me until toyota smartens up a little...The tundra gas mileage sucks...my silverado -still breaking in -registers 20.7 avg fuel economy...after break in I expect that to improve...I know the haters will say stuff after reading this - but I'm done with the dinky toy tacoma and the wanna be tundra....

Had a 2001 silverado 4x4 SB RegCab 5.3, moved on to a Duramax when I moved I down sized to a 4Runner, good vehicle but not for me, Hence 2-3rdgen tacos first 2.7 now the 3.5 I briefly looked for
Silverado/Sierra similar configuration to my 01, But pricing was beyond were I wanted to be plus the Dblcab taco offered more interior room for traveling with GF and pup. I weighed out the options-room in the cab Of the Tacoma verse the V8 and smaller cab of the GM plus pricing. The Colorado with Diesel was priced out of bounds also
Tacoma won out for my lifestyle presently the taco just works.

The only reason I found this place is because I was having issues with my turd.

Although I've started trying to avoid truck problem threads (for problems I don't have) because I don't want to find a new problem I wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Can you do an update after a year of ownership? I think when I've had enough of this truck I'm going to jump to a used full-size truck. I'm interested to see it you have problems.
