Correct. Each tech is different and their interpretation of the regulation will vary. Trying to argue with a valid point is irrelevant to them because “they think they know better”. I talked to a few guys many years ago when the 5vz wasn’t as popular and they stated they passed with it being in the passenger side. Why many years later, BAR wants it on the driver side, IDK. That alone, you’re altering the exhaust flow. That’s no different than someone adding a dorkle (snorkel) and smog place refuse to smog it because the air flow to the intake has been altered even though the factory air box is not tempered with. By that’s for another discussion.

Last year, I took my civic with a B18 swap legal and ref label to smog. The tech flag it even after seeing the State of California engine reclassification label, classifying it is an Acura. That concept applies to ref tech too, they will do what they think is correct even though it may not be.

Nonetheless, fabrication and welding is not an issue with me. As for the 2uz swap, they can be picky all they want.

The intent of this post is to gather information from folks who had legally 2uz swap their first gen Tacoma. Reading appendix from BAR site is useful but as mentioned, each station and tech can interpret the regulation differently.

I’m not here to argue who’s right and who’s wrong. I had my fair share of engine change experience and understand how easy *wink* it is.
