Initially, I was planning 2WD but then decided to go 4WD considering it's only a difference of $3k and probably $30 of monthly payment.

But 2018 4x4 stock is getting low in most dealers now and while I've gotten some decent quotes, it's all on 2WD (crewcab).

I live in Sacramento region (NCAL) so no snow in winter. However, I do go up Lake Tahoe/Reno areas in winter (my X5 is all wheel drive) and never had any issue but during heavy winter, CHP requires chains on all vehicles anyway.

On a 2WD truck with snow tires/chains, is this enough to make it thru? I do a lot of hiking/camping in summer but no serious terrain so I think 2WD would do totally fine.

But then, nothing screams like a real 'bruh' till you get the 4X4 decal on the tail!!!

Wondering if any TW'er here considered 4WD and then got a 2WD instead? Cheers!

Have you ever put chains on? It's a pain in the neck. Then, of course, during the worst of the storms, one of the hooks comes loose. Tap, tap, tap, tap, going down the road. Trashing up the fenders. Rear end still squirrely on steep roads.

Seriously, like you've been told in the several other threads you started, just go for the 4WD. It seems like you do enough outdoors stuff to warrant it.

4WD inventory may be low, but there are still good deals out there. Look at surrounding states and do the deal over the phone. That's what I did.

I wanted a 4x4 but the additional price vs how many times I'll use it just didn't equal out. I live in SUPER dry desert. Seeing rain is less common than seeing unicorns. I also have no time for any serious off roading. I still want a 4x4, but I don't regret not having one as I have zero need for one.

I have a 2wd. 4x4 would have been cool but not worth the extra money to ME. I had a 2006 F-150 4x4 and only used 4lo once in two years. So it really comes down to your needs vs wants

Also if you’re willing to travel south hit up a sales guy named Cody at Tustin Toyota. He’s pretty straight forward on prices/negotiations

I thought about 4x4 but never had one or needed one so I went 2wd love it. Great gas mileage and cheaper insurance. With a good set of tires it’s enough to take me where I need to go.

2wd is ok.. and lots of people live in areas that unless they are off road often enough 2wd will work just fine.
I live in a snowbelt area and 2wd trucks is just another word for getting stuck. We can get 2ft+ of snow over night and a 4x4 is the only way to get places when everyone else is stuck. I guess you'll just have to look at where you live and what you driving habits and weather is.

Here's my take. I have 2wd and it gets me through the desert and to remote camps just fine. But... I'd love to do some tougher trails and winter offroading and wish I had went with a 4x4. I didn't realize I would have this feeling until a few months after I got this truck. If you KNOW FOR SURE you won't get the same bug I got, then you're fine with 2wd and chains. But looking back I wish I got the 4wd.

Just be patient and get the 4x4. Resale value is great on them too.

I’m not complaining. I like my 2wd. Yeah, in hindsight I wish I had gotten a 4x4 but with the monthly payment increase, the 2wd is better than a knife in the head by the wife!!!! It will still hold its value when I trade it in. It’s a truck for God’s sake!!!

I think resale on ANY Tacoma will be great. And if you pay 3k more for a truck you may just get that 3k back in the end. But than again if you sold years down the road some might not want to give you extra for a 4x4 due to wear on parts, so really just depends on buyer. I know for me I wanted to spend a certain amount and I opted to spend the extra $3k on the tech package over the $3k on 4x4. I however didn't know at the time I would like off roading and truck camping so much and sometimes wish I had the 4x4 off road with tech package. I do however live close to the mountains where is snows and also the desert. I have had no issues so far with getting stuck. I air down, have larger tires, keep moving, and have weight in the rear with my camper. So essentially I go a lot of the same places 4wd trucks go. I also bring recovery gear. I later did buy 4x4 but that's in my Jeep Wrangler which I think is better suited for the tighter trails and rock crawling anyways. I wouldn't say I have regrets though. Really have to just buy based on what your needs and wisdom tell you.

I'm near Sacramento, San Jose area. I have 2016 TRD OF 2wd. I love mine, maybe I'll trade it in for a 4x4 later on. Or if I move out of state but there's no need to. You've got a great truck, I've gone camping out in Panoche hills and some other areas down south and have seen some light mud and it does fine, just don't push it. Most people I've met that aren't the "Super serious overlanders" barely use the 4wd capability anyway.

IMG_0382.jpg I have a 2016 TRD Sport 4x2. Love it and haven't been stuck. It has auto-LSD and haven't needed it! Then again, I don't go deep offroad and we have light Winters here. One thing I do have is a good set of tires! Your call though. Your driving habits and places you go might dictate a 4x4. However, any Taco is sweet! imho

I live in south Louisiana and my 2WD has been great! Honestly it’s everything I needed. The only reason I wanted an Off-Road was for the black fender flares, but that’s simple enough to obtain aftermarket. (Hey anybody looking to sell a pair of black fender flares?)

I had a 4x4 once and I think I used it twice. Once to mess around, and once because I parked in a muddy field and got stuck. So yes maybe that was worth it but I had that truck for like 8 years…it’s a nice add-on but definitely not a requirement unless you’re out there off roading once a month.

I also think there’s a huge stigma with having a 4x4 truck. The internet makes 4x4s look cool! Everyone “cool” has one! If there wasn’t a 4x4 sticker on the side, you couldn’t tell it from my 2WD when you’re passing me, ya know?

I went with 2wd because I live in SWFL and it is a daily driver. It’s flat and never snows so I can’t imagine ever using 4wd in any scenario. I have gone FL “off-roading” and never once have got stuck or remotely close to stuck, momentum is your friend with 2wd.

I would have preferred to purchase a 2.7L 4WD Access Cab, but wife and son insisted on the double cab. So we are proud owners of a 2WD SR.
