I want to put a cold air intake on but I’m still running stock exhaust. Will I get any benefit without changing out the exhaust yet and just running the new intake?

Truck came from the factory with a CAI already. You will gain nothing but noise, nose, and more noise. Save your money for a lift, tires, or anything else.

I put on my K&N for the noise. I wish i went with an enclosed intake like afe or volant, but they all do the same thing.... it does sound good paired with an exhaust though

Holley carb company published data (many years ago now) showing a 1.0 hp gain for every 10º F drop in intake temperature (at or near full throttle). How you get the 10º drop is up to you...... There are some tests I've seen where they injected atomized DISTILLED WATER into the air stream to let it drop the temp - and it worked. Here in Arizona I think the location of the factory inlet on my 4.0 .....SUCKS.

URD CAI ftw. I saw a 10-15* decrease between intake temps and ambient temps when swapping from my stock air box to the URD. No matter what everyone says, the factory air box is not a true cold air intake. The URD also flows quite a bit more air. The gains will be much more noticeable if you're forced induction, but i do think there are some gains to be had when ditching the factory restrictive intake

The oem air inlet is well designed. As stated above you will gain more noise than anything. Do research before you buy anything. Here is what I did.

I did not want the howling K&N style intake so I built my own modeled after the AEM version. Its a full 4" pipe that uses 45* angles and terminates with a velocity stack. Used a drop in K&N filter. my thoughts...

    1) It was cheap, about $45 for the parts.
    2) It gave me the sound I wanted, just a little throatier than stock. Sounds like a better version of stock.
    3) It feels like it runs stronger than stock. Take this with a big grain of salt. On a dyno, I doubt you would see any gain. But it does feel the truck pulls stronger, especially at partial throttle settings. I also noticed the truck up-shifts earlier going up hill while accelerating under partial throttle.

You will find plenty of CAI haters here. Also they are mostly not wrong. Actual power gains are minimal, so understand what you are getting and what you are paying for.

Yes a CAI works by providing cooler denser air into the engine for higher combustion. That has nothing to do with a cat back or other performance exhaust which works by making it easier and using less power to expel gasses on the exhaust stroke. So CAI affects intake stroke and exhaust affects the exhaust stroke

If stock makes for ambient iat, how is this possible?

I can talk you through the parts if you are interested. It did exactly what I wanted; added subtle throaty sound when accelerating. Plus the truck does feel more responsive. The trans seems to shift sooner and keep accelerating. To me that is a mark the perceived load has dropped a bit. I never measured the IAT, but I expect it would be the same as stock.

Basically it just slightly improved on the already good OEM design.

    You need:

    4" 45* silicone elbow
    4" straight silicone section
    4" Aluminum 45* tube 2' long
    4" Velocity Stack
    4 4" clamps
Some felt tape to line the fender (optional)
    Anthracite Plasti Dip (optional)

The pipe requires two cuts for the correct length. I also had to shorten the coupler going to the velocity stack. If you line the fender edge with the felt tape, the 4" velocity stack fits perfectly. Its easy to fit the stack with the fender liner removed. Just push the stack through and connect the coupler. Then connect that to your cut pipe and the 45* silicone elbow.

    Pretty easy to do.

I dont really know how it works but it draws air from inside its own box so its not hot like the air in the engine compartment

Stock does, volant without scoop does, afe does.
None run below ambient... So without ice or something, stock cant be beat in terms of pulling in cool air at speed

Funny enough urd doesnt do any better when both are going 45mph

that urd one scares me, definitely not for off road use. any after market intake still pulls air through the wheel well, I could of routed my aem one though the fender but its not a street truck so nah.
