I was attempting to keep it simple for the OP.

power adder has been shorthand for forced induction or nitrous for 50 years.

The stress any particular engine is under is based on the rigor used in the design process, the material choices, the strength of components compared to the loads imparted etc. if the designers planned for forced induction, and designed the pistons/rods/block/head gaskets/oil system/ecu strategy for the boost…There’s no reason that engine is under more stress than a non-turbo engine that wasn’t built to take the extra loading.

but you know that. You’re arguing semantics.

87 octane. Low boost high compression is a mood.

I traded my 08 4.0 with 130k for the 3.5 and I’m bull shit about that choice. Engine was mint and well maintained. Shame on me. VVTi

The 11:1 is static compression ratio and is fixed. You can manipulate the dynamic though with cam adjustments.

Absolutely accurate. Turbos have been around since the early 1900's, along with steam and ev's... Today's engines are engineered with tight machining specifications that allow efficiencies unlike older engines. Actually, Toyo should have added a turbo to 3rd gen 3.5 (Atkinson cycle) engine. Would have made a world of difference in performance (keep in mind - more air more hp). Unfortunately, vehicle manufacturer are reluctant (not in their DNA) to change tooling (assembly lines) after full production starts. I'm a big fan of inline 4 turbos. Took a 2024 Taco test drive and was pleasantly surprised (i will be buying one as soon as this intro period and market nonsense subsides). My wife drives a Honda Accord with 1.5L turbo and it's a little rocket on the freeway, and produces excellent mpg's. Also, they're so much easier to work on than the V6's and V8's stuffed in engine compartments. Just in my imho...

Internal engine clearances are no different than they were 30+ years ago. Look up rod and main bearing tolerances on an old 22re Toyota motor from 30 years ago. Compare it to any modern Toyota engine. Specs are all pretty much the same.

The 3rd gen 3.5 would not be a good motor for a turbo. The compression it too high.

Most modern turbo motors have high compression ratios. Gone are the days of 8:1 on boosted factory motors. Tundra is 10.4:1 and new Tacoma is 11:1. The 3.5 is 11.8:1... pretty easy for Toyota to drop it down a hair if they had decided to turbo it.

People said the same thing about v6 trucks because their 230hp 350 chevy was perfect.

people said the same thing about EFI because their edelbrock 650 ran great and just needed the idle settings fixed.

People said the same thing about electronic ignition because points were more reliable than complex electronic crap.

That`s true, but the 4.3 in my Blazer made me a believer.

Blame the governments. Toyota doesn't want to mess around with small forced induction engines but they have to to comply with emissions. Totally unrelated to MPG. I do see overall engine life going down vs NA motors but I don't think it will be that bad.

I beat the living piss out of my ‘18 Civic Sport (manual 1.5T) for 60,000 trouble free miles. I rarely accelerated without brushing up against the red zone. My M1114 gun truck did over 100+ escort missions in the 100+ heat with zero issues. I’m sold on turbos. After they get the bugs worked out, I’m betting it will be a legendary power plant. It will probably power my next vehicle.
