A little insight as to what I'm finding with my new TRD Sport, 278hp 8speed trans.
I know I keep repeating myself but it gives some perspective as to my opinions.
I've driven a 98 Ford Ranger with 3.0L V6, 5 spd manual trans, single cab for 24 yrs and is only 1400 miles away from turning over 300k. With all the digital gauges and the 14" dash mounted entertainment screen this is like upgrading from a Conestoga wagon to the Space Shuttle.
I've just completed my first real 'Average MPG' test and got (20.22)mpg
It's my 1st 4 cylinder and I find it to be a little louder than my old V6 but that may be the nature of the beast.
A V8 will sound a little smoother than a V6 and the V6 a little smoother than the inline 4 cyl. The engine has certainly got some pep and torque!
One annoying factor is that when idling while parked or at a stop light the electric cooling fan is really noticeable. (I haven't looked but I'm assuming it's an electric fan, I could be wrong?) Its very noticeable whatever it is!

As if most here forgot about the 22R and it's variants's unkillable existence, even when you threw pointless boost at it.

Front mail seal? Gone. Rear? Gone. Burns oil? Yup. Third gear missing? Of course. 600k on the Odo? You bet.

    I miss my pickup

Until they go full hybrid that's all you're ever going to average out a midsize truck

    4 cyl won't last long?

First gens with 4cyl are still around today. I am sure 4th gens will last long like 1st gens do. Take a look on the web for a blue Tacoma that had over million miles..

What did you expect? We’ve been saying for months it would be about 1 mpg better than the third gen V6.

It’s protected by a plastic skid plate! Shoot, I thought the gas tank skid of yesteryear was bad enough.

Super curious what they will install on the PRO/TH!?!

I'm curious as to what material the plates will be on the Pro and TH too.

Now I know you hard core Tacoma fans have spent 10’s of thousands upon thousands to make it your ride. But the PRO and most particularly the TH should come well protected AND equipped from the factory. Only the PRIMO stuff. But with “adjustments,” and the greed that goes with it, I just don’t see them putting something substantial.

Trust me, as a Tacoma fan, I want to see this Torque Gen succeed. But Toyota USA makes very bad decisions sometimes.

Yep l would suspect they should use the top of the line stuff on their premier trim levels.

If they put as ,much effort into the skid plates as those wacky seats, there should be nothing to worry about. :burp:

Yes, you are correct. It’s the electric fan under the hood. After endless years they did away with he old clutch fan. Don’t know if that’s good or bad long term.

I personally prefer electric. I feel they cool better at low RPM. If it's a two speed fan it should cool even better yet.

I was honestly shocked to see a clutch fan on my 3rd gen. I guess I assumed manufacturers did away with those years ago.

I assume it’s impossible to make ICE engines more efficient in a pick up. I think that’s as good as it gets. Tacomas got heavier too.

100% possible....just that it requires to neuter the truck and that is what Ford did with the Maverick.

Sure. It’s a turbo charged 4 banger. The little guy is low to the ground and has better aerodynamics than any Tacoma. That right there is an easy 5 MPG
