TacoDaily posted a link to an excellent comprehensive review on 5/11/24 (p.6). I think it's an SR5 that is 'prototype'? I found it very informative and covers most of the changes that have been made for the 2024 4th generation model. Also really like that red color.

Same here. I've got 90k on my '17 Civic Hatchback. I routinely romp the shit out of that thing. Not a single issue so far. That being said, it is getting traded in the next few weeks for a 4th Gen Tacoma.

For an average Toyota customer and Taco driver, the new engine will be highly beneficial. More low-end power, better responsiveness. However, I highly doubt we'll see 200-300K 4th gens with original turbos. There are only so many people who will actually bother to learn about proper turbo care. You can beat on a turbo, but only by so much.

The best bet is to recycle. Once you hit 100K, it is time to either do a major tune-up or sell and buy another one. I am planning to tune the 5 series with twin turbos because it is such a good daily. However, IDK what I'd do with a 4th gen.

Love the idea that a possible $2000 or so repair at 200k is enough reason to throw the truck away for the fearmongers here

yes it wasn't fast but it did have 265 lb. ft. or torque at 2000 RPM's. not too bad given the model year and constraints. i don't know the payload ratings for that year f250 but safe to say it was/is at least twice that of the tacoma. i know, apples to oranges but you brought it up.

    Agreed.

But people will claim they just drive really gently so they’ll beat EPA estimates by 20% but won’t apply that to a hypothetical 2024

Seems like they’d get 20% over epa estimates in a 2024, then, also

It is highly unlikely to be $2K. Turbos are only one part of the equation, you will probably replace everything expose to very high temps. Engine parts are also taking a beating. I'd say triple that to be sure and that's on the cheap side. If a car is solid, then it is still cheaper to repair than to buy a new one. Some cars are worth rebuilding and we won't know much about 4 gen for the next few years.

Sure would. But it wouldn’t be a great throwback back in my day gas was .19 cents and I could buy a house for 3 fruit roll ups post

Most folks with continuously revolving car payments don't understand time value of money or how compounding interest works.

Gotta say, I'm quite impressed with how civil this discussion has been. I haven't been on TW since the 2024 came out and I'm loving the irony of the 3rd Gen folks being on the offense about the motor in the 4th gen ;)

Throwing some wood on the burn pile here - Toyota has been using forced induction in just about every one of their flagship 4x4's around the world for the last 40 years. Toyota knows a thing or two about turbos

I think you've nailed it. It's not just the shape it's the frontal surface area. Shorter and narrower by a small percentage each would multiply to a large decrease in frontal surface area.

    D=Cd X R X V^2/2 X A

So you build a truck that is 6 inches shorter and 6 inches narrower and 10% more streamlined....it needs 25% less gas to hold it at speed. Plus you've likely substantially reduced the weight....which would add onto that.

My first pickup was an old Chevy S15 with a carburetor (2.8 V6 125 HP) and it got essentially the same MPG as my 2nd gen taco. But....it would look like a toy sitting next to the taco. When I see an S10 or S15 on the road now (RARE)....I can't believe I used to drive around in one of those tiny trucks.

I don't know if a truck that small would sell today....but it sure would be interesting to see what kind of MPG you could get with truck that size and a modern 4 cylinder turbo.

Buy a 3cyl car and take the body out and make the frame longer so Tacoma body fit on.

    So you have better mileage!

Any friends of yours will ask you to borrow your truck... you will go like "Sure, here is the key"

He go out for a ride. Then he goes like "What the hell?! 35MPG?! This is better than my Tacoma which my truck is in shop for service."

As he feels your truck isn't fast enough like his truck does which he has concerns about your truck.

He tells you what he noticed on the road.. You chuckled.. then you say to him, "Oh.. That's a glitch. Thank you for informing me."

He went home confused. He tells his wife what he noticed his friend's truck that runs 35 MPG... But my friend said it's a glitch. But I see 35+ MPG both ways. Wife noticed the window sticker on the internet via Google Images then says "Silly rabbit, Tacomas do not get over 23 MPG.

Everyone mad at Toyota when it's the gov forcing them to make small turbo engines. By virtually all accounts the 2.4 is much better motor to drive than the 3.5 but only time will tell on reliability. I doubt Toyota would commit to 8 year design cycles on an engine that goes kaput at 125,000 miles though. Corporate motors used in all these different applications are generally vetted pretty well before production.

They are putting this engine in virtually everything, so it better be reliable and long lasting. Time will tell, but I bet it will be a strong engine with maybe a turbo replacement in the 150-200K window.
