About two years ago I really got into digital video/film. I shoot alot using my Nikon DSLR and also a GoPro.

Due to the high def capabilities the file sizes are huge.

I upgraded my computer to an HP Pavilion Elite which essentially can only process minimal amounts of video. As soon as I start merging clip, using effects and so forth, the program/computer crashes.

Numerous people have told me I need to upgrade but no one has ever given my specific computers or capability requirements.

I would like to use my computer for normal things and also all my video editing needs.

Start with your ram. It's cheap to upgrade. Shoot for at least 8gb

Make sure your os will support it though. If it's a 32bit os, you'll only see 4 gb. Only a 64 bit os will see more than 4gb.

Video card. If you're using a program that supports GPU processing, get a nice Nvidia graphics card and put those GPUs to good use.

I have been doing computers for long time...

Need specs on present rig, IE....

Actual model #, HP has a great site, punch in model number, stuff just magically appears, LOL
Processor (single, dual, quad?) AMD or Intel?
    Ram/mems...what is in rig now....
    Vid, onboard or separate card?

Once this has been determined, it will be easy to figure what you can and can not do with the HP....store bought rigs I only work on, I build all my rigs myself and for other people...HP can be disappointing sometimes with the upgrades, newer stuff is better to play with though...

anywhere from 8 to 16 gigs of ram will be more than sufficient...

good luck, hey you can PM me if you really want some quick answers...

I have done some video editing on my computer..these are prob the big 3

Quadcore CPU - Intel with hyperthreading(Core i7's) would be best.
    16GB+ memory
    Good dedicated video

Combine those with some good large hard drives and you should have a good little rendering monster :)
