For whatever reason, I never really noticed the difference. That could well be driving location (very little city driving) and it could well be my fairly conservative driving habits. Even towing a trailer the shift points don't seem to matter to me. I don't expect to pass people while towing, and usually I'm under the speed limit anyway because I don't want to get even shittier mileage than I'm getting pulling the trailer.

I ignore it because I found it to be negligible in executing its purpose if you want to look at it that way. I do the same thing with the cruise control, never use it. I quickly found that the truck got 15 mpg on flat freeway using the cruise control. I routinely get between 20 and 24 mpg at the same speed by regulating the speed myself. I'm a hell of a lot less heavy footed than the PID in that cruise controller.

EDIT: Another way to say all that is that with a V6 I simply don't find that the shift points matter for how I drive. Might be different if I drove differently or the ECT was trying to get the most from a 22r pushing an automatic and towing a trailer.

yea, that cruise control will just give it 100% throttle when it dips under speed. really aggressive but i guess it has to be that way to function correctly.

    Another fellow SFV/VC member!

Do you have the 2.7 or 3.5?

My 2021 2.7 was taken in last year to see if an upgrade was available and it was not.

I get by with the ECT always on mod but if there's a new software update I can get, I'm all for it.

tunes should be available sometime this year for our 2.7s. Vftuner finally cracked the ECU.

Always good to find common ground :D

No reason it needs to be aggressive though. I think they just do that because they expect most of their target market are aggressive drivers. I would love it if some automaker would start supplying "open source" vehicles :D Something where I could tune the cruise controller's PID loop to my liking - lots less I and a bit more P.

open source would be amazing. imagine all the tunes we would already have if that was the case.

ECT does make a difference, maybe not what some as myself like when its on while just driving around. I would say its more for towing a heavy load where this truck may require longer shift points. I tried it once when my truck was new towing my 2k lb boat. It didn't work out....much too long shift points with excessive engine noise, and poor fuel economy. Found S5 the ticket instead.

I’m at the dealer and I asked what TSB was done. 005818

After having driven the 2022 Tacoma SX rental this past weekend, and remembering my ‘18 being just the same, the difference is night and day. The SX had that lethargic response on the throttle as well.

The drivability of the powertrain is truly enjoyable now. A sporty Tacoma? :pumpkin:

Im’a gonna keep my eyes peeled for that idiot. Perhaps a Taco gathering he attends and show up unannounced, lol!!! Then we’ll see…

Ok, that is an older one specific to '18 models.
On the other thing you said , I have no clue as to what you are talking about. Maybe address it to the "idiot" you are referring to?

Back after a few weeks of the new tune and I have to say, if you haven’t done the TSB, it’s a must do. Instafan here and I have not even tried ECT since. It’s that enjoyable now. Like I want to be driving this truck all the time feeling.

Two examples for you L.A. folk, first, Atlantic on ramp onto the 60 heading West after a buy and run at The Hat(cheeseburger, tuna sandwich, and the infamous chili cheese fries…with extra cheese!). Figuring on location that southern heads would know, about a 75 yard dash up to the top of the on ramp. So making that turn at about 25mph, it was time to floor it and it was just smiles to the top around 70-75mph flowing at traffic speed. No hesitation at WOT like before. Just a very smooth torque curve. Next, my beloved HWY 27 where S4 was a must for the curvy upclimbs so there would be no crazy shifting from the trans. Well…now I take it in D!!!! No upshifting unless I floor it some. So a fair push to the pedal lifts the rpms now and doesn’t downshift. It also holds the rpm’s some depending on pedal placement.

If they now can improve the ETC, if there is any room for improvement (I personally enjoy using it), it would make these stock tunes killer.

So what’s the best thing about it? It now keeps the motor’s shift points (in revs) closer to the magic 3500 bomb.

Update: Now that I have about 1,700 miles on my '22 V6, It's shifting much better. I'm no longer using the ECT button.

I think you'd have even better success if not using the ect at all, but happy for you its shifting better.

For some reason, ECT appears to drastically improve my gas mileage when under load at highway speeds on moderate grades, compared to flat highways with no cargo. Was getting 24 MPG on a camping trip last week (with ECT on the whole trip), while I normally only get ~20 MPG from daily driving.

This isn't the first time I've noticed ECT with a heavy load getting me better mileage, and the truck seems to perform better as well. I'll have to test my findings without using ECT to make sure it's the cause of the increase in MPG on these hilly camping trips.

Just the opposite when i tried ECT in my tacoma. Fuel economy went the way of my old tundra on the highway. I think i got 17 mpg at best. 6th gear od in the D mode is best by far when cruising 75 mph on the highway.

Have had the truck for about 2-3 weeks now.
Its great on highways and downshifts between 5/6 with hills appropriately.
Its around town I end up in the bog zone where im at 1K rpms and giving it gas doesnt make me go unless i give it so much gas it realizes I want to downshift. I think its just combination of lack of low RPM torque plus an AT that aggressively seeks high gears for EPA reasons. Usually around 20-30mph is when I see it.
I drive like a grandpa overall and have always been light on throttle with every car ive owned so that gives it plenty of time to upshift to point I can hardly move.
ECT on, no problems with 1K rpm bogging around town but the shifts are a bit jerky.
Overall not bad enough that I dislike the truck, more concerned what all the constant shifting with ECT off does to the tranny over time, and am a bit disappointed that a brand new truck that is 6 years into its generation doesnt have this commom complaint naiked down - i went in expecting extremely smooth and intelligent shifts and not having to play with the throttle or buttons to get it to do what I want. Playing with the throttle to get the desired shifts is normally how i drive old beater cars with flaky transmissions not brand new ones.

Give it more time for in town driving. The transmission will learn to be in the correct gear. I have no issues with in city driving with their automatic.....its just like any other vehicle with an auto. As far as using ECT, try to avoid using it, otherwise only for when towing.
