The ECT button on the 2021 is completely different than my previous 2017. The 2017 shifting algorithms were terrible compared to the 2021.

If you tried to do a U turn in the 2017 without the ECT being enabled, you risk your life. No such issue with the 2021 and it disabled.

It is unnecessary on the 2021.

A tune is night and day difference than ECT.
Even if you upgraded the TSB software. If you haven't driven a tuned truck then you don't have any idea whatsoever. Just saying.

There is no need for me to waste my money.

    The ECT does just fine.

Sounds like your rear end is rubbed. Don’t hate a person that is enjoying the benefits of ECT. And you’re not, so you had to put extra money into your Gen.

Good for your pride, but not your wallet:0)

there's definitely a huge difference. pay attention to what RPMs the shifts occur at. it will stay revving higher for longer.

I did try ECT. Imo, the truck doesn't run right with it on when unloaded. You have more engine roar, and the transmission takes a stupid long time to shift. Fuel economy would be similar to what my tundra v8 got. Maybe its fine for towing a 5k trailer or more, but nothing thats light duty, or worse an empty truck. Like i said, i'm very happy with it always in the D mode. I'm sure anybody else that drives it would say the same. Theres zillions of these trucks that i see on the road when i'm about. There's gotta be many many similar ones as mine that don't drive around in ECT, or need a tune. I'm beginning to think just the only one's that come to tw are whining about this stuff.

Well all that matters is you like your truck. As far as fuel mileage with ECT on I can hardly tell the difference and I’ve never heard anyone else say it causes such a decrease it’s like a Tundra mileage lol

I drive on hilly roads, even the interstate has some. It really does shift less...now it does sometimes delay upshifting when going up a hill and reaching the top but usually it just makes it shift more appropriately. I kept noticing my truck upshifting when it shouldn't and downshifting when it didn't need to, but when I put it in 6s and ect it does this MUCH less. Just my personal observations of course but that is what ect and "sport" is supposed to do...well I don't know about s mode but ect yes

I swear i could see the fuel gauge dropping when i tried ECT. Truck made more engine noise and didn't want to upshift when it should have.
That sounds like my truck when i drove it home from the dealer till the transmission adapted/learned your driving habits and road conditions. I guess your transmission never graduated. You guys have different performing trucks then i have...they don't sound normal for an automatic.
It is imo. My truck didn't come with S6, only up to S5. I figured toyota didn't have a need for it as long as you have 6th gear in the D mode.

Of course there is no more power. Gear ratios are the same and if you stomp on the gas Full throttle from stop with ECT on or Off there is 0 difference.

What I find awful on these trucks that Toyota hasn't fixed at all since they came out is part throttle response. Any slight touch of the gas pedal sends the transmission shifting all over the place in normal D mode. In ECT it doesn't do that. In the 30 plus vehicles I've owned the Tacoma transmission calibration stock is by far the worst. Luckily there's tunes/ECT or just put the radio up and ignore it.

The must have really messed up the 2022s. While I concur that Toyota’s search for economy has the Tacoma transmission choosing a taller gear than I would specifically choose, when I touch the gas pedal it has never sent the tranny “shifting all over the place”. It still mostly steps up through the gears until you are schlepping around at 1100 RPM, as expected based on Toyotas misplaced goal of keeping economy numbers up.

I just recall my 2017 being frustrating until I got the TSB done at dealer for it and then it was a bit better. I was hoping 2022 would be different, but it's definitely not. I will drive it in ECT and then likely just get one of the tunes.

Honestly, I don’t think they are even necessarily ‘allowed’ to change the programming, as that would change the trucks economy numbers, which would change their whole business strategy for their North American offering, which relies on certain overall aggregate economy of the entire fleet they sell.

I think they are stuck with their choices now.

After this discussion I ran some errands around town with the ECT button on for the first time in long, long while. Damn. It sure was a lot better to drive.
I guess I may go back to turning it on every time I drive it again. Damn.
Now I want 4.88's and a Magnuson SC.

i used to run "errands around town with the ECT button on" also but at some point i would forget to push the button when leaving a parking lot and make a right turn onto the road and and that was the "oh crap" moment for me, had to almost floor it, that's when i got the ECT "On at Start up mod".
