Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
Simple, reliable, trouble-free upgrade is OME. If you're adding a bumper, get the 886 coils (but DON'T put them on until you have some weight up front......at least, if you want to keep all your teeth).
I'm like you in your approach. I'm not looking at Look At Me points or racing or crawling. I want something simple, proven over the decades, and able to get me way WAY out in the bush *and back* so that I can drive it to work every day. I read about many people on TW talking about how awesome their King IconBurgs are, but just as often I read about the need for them to be rebuilt. I have yet to hear a complaint about OMEs.
Full disclosure: I have OMEs on mine, with a cosmic fuckton of weight up front (winch, ARB bumper, dual batteries, Puma compressor, Pelfrey skid, BFG MT 255s, and my Hi-Lift, sometimes some winch chain), and I wouldn't trade them for a free set of Icons. While I like the ride of their Dakar leafs, I did have to add a leaf and airbags to handle the weight of a weeks-long expedition; if I had to do it over again, I'd go for the AllPro Expedition leafpack, but I'd still stick with OME for the rest.

I'm just curious, never having taken the rear panels off: Is that how our back panels actually come, with the checkerboard pattern? 'Cuz if that's the case, holy hell that's awesome, and now I have a reason to pull them off!

Mach375 and Doording thankyou for the responses I appreciate it. I'm not looking for something that I will have to rebuild or mess with alot. The OME set up seems about right with the Dakar leafs and maybe the airbags, simplicity rules the day. More of an AK47 of a truck. By the way, does the AK47 reference suffice for me to still post in here or should I just go fuck myself......

Anyone have any thoughts on the UCO stormproof matches? I won a case lot including the waterproof cases on eBay, from everything I've read these are pretty good matches, even will burn if you hold them underwater while lit and take them back out.

I don't rely solely on matches to get a fire going. I picked up some magnesium chips and a flint/striker as my back up. I'm even thinking about getting a fresnel lens as a back up to my back up.

As a sort of experiment, I also got a mess kit silverware pack that was Swiss military surplus. Pretty slick with a can opener, knife, spoon, and fork. I might just pick up a few more.

Take a second to check this out:

    http://www.springtailsolutions.com/product-category/toyota-fj/fj-cruiser/

This guy has some universal panels that might work well for something like @nat has done. His rig looks AWESOME and has long been an inspiration for me as well. I view my truck/trailer to be a single unit and a very important part of my overall "plan."

All I have done has been simple and the best I can afford. One important thing I am lacking that @nat has is the snorkel and I am looking to add one this Spring. So much going on in this thread it is cool to see folks posting in it again -- a major consideration for my purchase of the truck was just this -- the "plan."

    Stay safe and pay attention!!

I bought my 2004 Xtracab with the idea of a daily driver/BOV. It's a SR5 with a 2.7L and manual everything. I bought the 2.7L for its gas mileage, ease of repairs and knowing myself, I'm less likely to do extensive drivetrain mods on a 4-banger. For me, my plan is to keep this a KISS truck.

My plans are less on extreme trail rides and more on survivability and recovery. Its already wearing 31"x10.5" tires which is good enough for my area. I do plan on adding skidplates to protect as much of the drivetrain as possible as well as sliders. Upgrading the alternator to a Mean Green to run extra lights, a compressor and winch is on the list along with storage.

As far as a kit, it breaks down to first aid, recovery and survival. The first aid consists of a main first aid kit gears towards lacerations and broken bones. I also have a IFAK consisting of decomp needles and similar items for immediate life safety in the event of an accident.

Recovery right now consists of a helmet bag with tow straps, ropes, chains, jumper cables, ratchet straps, etc.

Survival right now is contained in a 5-gal bucket. The bucket is gamma sealed and can be used as a seat, water storage and storage of everything else. Within the bucket, I have a 30cal ammo can, tarps, rope, paracord, snares and a sterno camping stove with fuel. In the ammo can, I have waterproof matches, water purification tablets, ponchos, space blankets and candles.

My thought process on this is based on my most likely scenario which is going off the road in a snow storm out in the country. Everything is geared around being able to survive a few days without assistance. My kit will keep me warm, dry and hydrated until help arrives or I pack out.

My plan for the truck is to keep it a daily driver but strengthen areas where needed.

If by 'research' you mean 'watched a few shows on The History channel' then yeah, I've done 'research' and a bit more than that and I come up with the gubment isn't the Illuminati. I think there's a lot of interesting coincidences and it's an interesting sub-plot but it's a distraction from what's really going on IMHO. You're welcome to believe whatever you like and I'm as much a conspiracy theorist as the next guy but that stuff is just too hokey to hold any water for me. Just like what you just posted it's easily explained if you do a little bit of additional fact checking rather than believing whatever YouTube videos from non-vetted sources have to say as gospel.
