I have always kept 5-6 Esbit fuel cubes in my Solo stove, but not recently. They work great, too. Shave a little off the side and they catch a spark. I also picked up some fire gel, but it still takes a flame to light but will get super hot and dry out wood. I did the sock lint scraping technique and put a little ball of lint on the gel, and it caught a spark and got going. I may throw a packet of that in my bag just as a wet weather back-up.

Out here in AZ, I'm spoiled with plenty of dry tinder even in the monsoon season up north in the woods. There are always dry pine needles at the base of any tree, or just underneath the top layer. In snow would be a different story.

You can find dry needles under snow, you just need to dig for it.

I know from personal experience when an ex chic and I got trapped on a mountain in a freak October snow storm.
Being prepared saved our lives and made it so we didn't become those dipshits that had to be rescued that you see on the news.

I like cheap and simple. I just needed a clear one that I could lay over a topo map for getting basic headings. I know Suunto makes a trustworthy compass so it was an easy buy. The little scale on the side is nice for estimating distances. Those are all the features I really needed.

    Hahahahaha

A fellow tacoma enthusiast I work with came home to a unimoog parked in his driveway. Apparently some of his buddies bought one and are driving it cross country. That thing is sweet! And decked out!

    Oh good lord...
Driving cross country...at a top speed of 45. Hope they've got some time. And a serious gas card.

UMmm - was the 'SLUT' intentional? Did no one else see this. I saw the 'Slut" before anything else popped out at me in the pic

edit: reread the page. too funny. got to have a sense of humor.
