They were still in service at Pope AFB when my brother was there a couple of years back. I doubt they've gotten rid of the warthogs since then.

There's nothing else like the sound of the A-10 engines.

X2. Years ago I was canoeing down the Sandy River and had two of them fly around a curve downriver and blow past over my head. Super impressive, but I very nearly shit myself when they came around the curve at tree-top height. They were probably practicing low-altitude flying and using the river as a 'canyon'

They don't look that fast on TV, but in real life they move right along.

That is what they do! Low altitude strafing runs attacking ground targets. I worked on them for about a year before the unit switched over to F-16s. Still like the A-10 more. You could park a Volkswagen in the ammo bay. All components layed out in a way that was easy (relatively) to work on. F-16 everything is "mashed" in the smallest possible package. I think the Air Force is phasing the A-10 out.:(

They are. Retired them once already in fact. It's too bad they cite cost to run/maintain as the primary reason because most anyone who has been involved with that platform in any way has nothing but praise for it. This seems like another example of we already have the perfect tool but want to spend more money.

Yes and no. The first time it was the F16 in the 90's but it proved to not be as capable for CAS (Close Air Support... low and slow) and was brought back. This time it's the F35... regardless of if it's actually capable of CAS or not. They want everything to be expensive jets and will cram a square peg into a round hole. Ultimately w/o a real plan for sustainability of the platform long-term they will get their way but CAS will suffer greatly. The A-10 fills a roll and fills it VERY well. The F35.. while a technological marvel.. has been a tremendous waste of money. Not to mention that a lot of these decisions have been made more in the name of keeping money flowing in home districts as opposed to what is actually best for supporting our boys on the ground. So, in the end, politics is more to blame than anything.

Was it not the A10 that was just in the news this past month to be retired, and then was decided they'd be kept in service for use in the sandbox for a period of time?

You wouldn't scoff at Jez's inclusion of an umbrella if you were stuck in the desert in the blistering shadeless heat of summer. If you gotta walk then having lightweight portable shade can be a life(skin) saver. Could also serve as a solar still if you need water, maybe, seems like, never tried I, just me thinking, I think. Good and reasonable inclusion I think, therefore I am, I think.

My dad was talking all about it. Came up for retirement (again) but ISIS renewed it's continued use for the time being.
