    In California it is especially difficult because of the concealed carry laws.

    I only have mine with me when we take trips, because my truck is unlocked to much of the day while I'm working. Leaving my gun in there would be asking for trouble.

    Exactly.
    Maine is an open carry state, but I opted to pay the $$ for the class and the permit so that I could carry without anybody knowing that I am. I don't like people, so the last thing I want is to have random strangers commenting (either positive or negative comments) about my having a gun. Plus, the element of surprise is an advantage I'd like to keep on my side. It's unlikely I'll ever have to draw my gun, but if I do I would prefer that whoever I point it at be extremely surprised when it appears.
