    Thread jack...

Keep at it man. The schooling is hard but once you get to clinicals you will start enjoying it more. The boards are hard also. And nerve racking. It's a good job. But hard and frustrating at times. Stinky too, :p Some people you just can't help no matter how hard you try. Most of the time, however, you feel like you are making a difference in your patients lives. I've been an RN now for over 6 years and I'm glad I am in a career that won't be going away any time soon.

interesting thread. Preppers are always thought of as nuts until shit happens.

Just watched a show "Doomsday Preppers" You guys would dig it, these guys are fully prepared to survive off grid for years if need. Guns are a large part of their preparations because they claim you need to protect what everyone's going to want to take from you. One guy has his family shoot guns daily.

I have spent quite a bit of time in the middle of nowhere and have a lot of exposure to search and rescue operations (on the good end). I have several gear set-ups depending on the location and climate I will be in.

You might get called a nut for being prepared, but I can tell you that if you ever do need rescue, the search and rescue folks will truly appreciate your being prepared.

The only thing I would add a supply of instant coffee. You should also throw in some powdered drink mix. The coffee makes mornings in the sticks way better and after a few days of nothing but water, you will appreciate the drink mix.

If you know you are really headed for the sticks, there are several places that you can rent a satellite phone. Minutes are very expensive, but it is cheap insurance when are really out there.

Open up your tailgate and stick a few ziplock bags or MRE's in there. It's light enought to night cause any strain on the metal.

You should add some form of e-rations, enough to tide you for a week. I have my "Oh, Shit!" box, full of camping gear, stove, wp matches, 3x5gallon collapseable water jugs, a filtration pump, and a sizeable aid kit. I cycle out freeze dried foods on a yearly basis, and try to keep a month's worth on hand. Rode out too many hurricanes to fully depend on local govt's to keep things running!
