Also gas mask canisters (filters) are only good for about 7 days once taken out of their sealed package...after that they are only rated for filtering a mild fart. I wonder when his gas mask was last leak tested on a JSMLT machine or inspected by anyone who knows anything about them. The whole gas mask craze is beyond me.
A 3M dust mask would suit most peoples needs just fine.

Exactly. I'm not even into survival stuff and I keep an axe, rope, straps, water, lighters and matches, two types of saws, xl crow bar, knife, and quality scissors in my truck at all times. I feel even with just this stuff, I'm fairly prepared. I don't keep a gun in the truck because I don't feel comfortable doing so. But I have them, and if I ever need to dip out quick, I will grab them.

Not quite true. A lot of gas masks won't filter out the smell at all, just the harmful particulated poop in it.

Hello everyone, I have been reading this thread for the first time today and I thought I would share some stuff.
Here is a DYI Gun vault a friend of mine built from an ammo can.
    http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=8&f=35&t=410808
I read some posts about putting lanyards on lighter to keep them dry. I have one of these, I tossed the retractable spool and went with 550 but the idea is neat.
    http://www.retractablereels.com/ori...p-707.html?osCsid2=nd9pd47e4prei3ttvhuf3eldf0
This is a really useful device, I put a blade on the side of mine but I love it.
    http://www.countycomm.com/eodrtool.html
This is a handy way to store and rapidly deploy 50’ of 550 cord.
    http://www.countycomm.com/dropline.html
This is a useful way to store batteries
    http://www.survival-pax.com/PowerPax-A9-Pack-Battery-Caddy.html
I added this device to the 9vt battery stored in the battery caddy listed above.

Also this site has a ton of stuff to offer.

Anyway, if any of this stuff has been discussed before I apologize. I just though you guys would find some of this stuff useful.

Im not going to argue technicalities with you because you most likely know more about guns than me. However I just see the 22 as a versatile weapon for a survival weapon. You can carry a lot of bullets. You can stock up cheaply. It is extremely common if you need to acquire more after the "apocalypse" or "shit hit the fan" whatever.. Depending on the rounds you can drop most animals with a well placed shot between the eyes. Shooting small game won't blow it to pieces.

Ive never shot a 0.410 so I cannot compare..

i would have said get one in .22lr but they dont make that :p

EDIT: better yet, get a flare gun and put the little insert in it that lets you shoot .22lr out of it.

I just remember growing up on the farm I used that 22 almost daily as a kid. Shot birds, foxes, rabbits, snakes, sheep (sick/diseased), dogs.. handy gun and cheap. But i know what you're saying if you needed to take down something more serious .. you may be limited

Sorry the spelling was a bit hard to follow. So you have a V8000 or you have a 121 series commercial radio? One is 75w the other is 50w. They also have different narrow and wideband receivers and step ups. Again one is commercial and one is amateur radio.

So your a "radio tech" but you don't have your ticket? Thanks for the explanation about how the VHF spectrum is divided up. I think you are bit confused the laws of the Business Band and Land Mobile.

138–144 MHz: Land mobile, auxiliary civil services, satellite, space research, and other miscellaneous services
144–148 MHz: Amateur radio 2 Meters band
148-150 MHz: Land mobile, fixed, satellite
150–156 MHz: "VHF business band," public safety, the unlicensed Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS), and other 2-way land mobile, FM
156–158 MHz VHF Marine Radio; narrow band FM, 156.8 MHz (Channel 16) is the maritime emergency and contact frequency.
159.81-161.565 MHz Railways [5] 159.81-160.2 are railroads in Canada only and is used by trucking companies in the U.S.
160.6-162 Wireless microphones and TV/FM broadcast remote pickup
162.40–162.55: NOAA Weather Stations, narrowband FM

In 2004, the FCC required all CFR 47 Part 90 VHF (150-174 MHz) and UHF (421-512 MHz) PLMR (Private Land Mobile Radio) licensees operating legacy wideband (25 kHz bandwidth) voice or data/SCADA systems to migrate to narrowband (12.5 kHz bandwidth or equivalent) systems] by January 1, 2013.

    http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/CFR-2010-title47-vol5/xml/CFR-2010-title47-vol5-sec90-35.xml

There isn't a lot of truly unlicensed area, the grey area being you can use it for educational or event purposes. Not to mention there are basically no public repeaters in the business bands. In ham bands there are many many repeaters.

I encourage everyone to get licensed (it's very easy) and responsibly use amateur radio for your survival needs. Get together a plan involving repeaters and simplex freqs for meetups with your loved ones.

Getting a race radio and hoping to step on ham bands in the event of SHTF just makes you a shit head.

Sorry about the spelling and grammatical errors. I was on a phone and typing like a rat on crack. I have the V8000 that mostly gets used for race purposes, although I also listen to my weather stuff on it. I do not have my "ticket". I have been using FM comms for about 12 years professionally, and never saw the need to get licensed on the "amateur" side of the house because I do not transmit over there, but I would in an emergency if my life depended on it. Although I am not licensed, my radios are, and they all have a site ID and all the legal stuff approved by the FCC. There is one HAMster in our office, but he is a meteorologist and just does it for a hobby. I'm not an expert on civilian comms by any means, or FCC regulations, but I can sure tweak a radio like nobody's business and know that in a shtf scenario I would much rather have an FM radio than a CB. I also know that 99% of all radio traffic is from unlicensed users. Can you think of anyone other than HAM guys that have a license? Maybe the FCC needs to fine every cop, ambulance, military vehicle, and aircraft in the U.S. because those guys do not take tests before keying that mic. Maybe they should, but 99% do not. Hell maybe I should, lol. :D

No worries. As far as licensing goes... On the business band, it's the organization, group or business that gets the license not the users. Their license covers their users and they are responsible for their groups use. This applies to the police (although 99% of LE uses trunked digital systems and only uses 2m as backup), cab companies, security, ambulance, etc. Aircraft and Military aren't in the business band. Basically most of what you hear on 2m is in fact licensed in some way. The loop hole being the educational and event allowances in the law. If you want to get some anal, a race radio can only be used in an "schedule event". A race in the US should apply for a event permit. Well as you know thats never enforced or questioned.

I completely agree with you on the 2m being far superior to CB. I would still encourage you to get your amateur radio license, you could pass it in your sleep. It will open up a lot of SHTF and offroad tools like APRS.
