I have a couple of the GRS radios, but for secure communications between vehicles or people is the TriSquare XRS radios. They use a frequency hopping capability, and talk for about a mile. Good for use between vehicles or what ever, and are about the same cost as the GRS, but without a bunch of people on your frequency.

Can't get the link to post, go to Amazon and type in Trisquare XRS. I have the 300 series. Hands free mikes, rechargeable batteries, and they worked great on our last vacation trip to Legoland.

lol you guys are nuts. I've had mine for two weeks and I've already done this naturally.

Glove box I have a few different screwdrivers, knive, headlamp, flashlight, lighter. Middle console I have another all in one screwdriver, glasses, gloves, excedrin, benedryl (allergic to nuts) and a few other meds.

Under seat storage I have the jack, some straps, jumper cables, blanket, more straps. Behind seats I have a tarp, more blankets, spare tubes for my bike, and a few water bottles for some odd reason. haha

    I need of these next

Wind up radios, which i have been meaning to replace since they are cheap. I am always looking for new survival shit to fill up the storage units in my truck. Plus i have a thing for good flashlights...wife makes fun of me for all this stuff...i need to show her this thread so she knows i really am not the only one who wants to be prepared!!

If you have msn sized hands, the sig is too small. Try out the H&K USP in a compact frame. It has alot if the features of the USP tactical without the price tag.

As a fellow flashlight enthusiast, check out the inova t4. Rechargeable 5 function flashlight. Mine is mounted inside my truck at the base of my seat so it's always in reach. I have been using this light for the past 6 years without failure. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0045U9QL0/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1357225692&sr=8-3&pi=SL75

    Pretty decent range?

Which format do you use it in most?

Seems like a pretty decent range. To be honest, i bought it for when i go offroad, and since i've got it i havent been offroad lol.

i've used it mainly when i'm on the interstate driving. i actually heard / witnessed two truckers fighting each other on the highway. i heard it for a while before i actually saw the 2 trucks swerving at each other. Cant really put a distance on it though...:notsure:

For $75 I might just have to give it a try.

Thanks for posting up about it!

also, in it's portable version its not too shabby either. when we took my fiance's car to myrtle beach last summer i brought it just to listen in case there was anything i needed to watch out for. i'm sure the range is much shorter, but i was able to hear someone warn about a speed trap before i got to it. the only thing that sucks about the portable version is all of the freakin batteries you need.

That's the feedback I was looking for. As of right now, I don't have a good way to mount it in my truck. I hate windshield mounts - never found one that actually worked and stayed in place without a ton of spit and adjustment. I also hate the residue it left behind.

I'm hoping to get a RAM laptop mount soon and they have a ton of different mounts for it that I'll likely use for it.

    Thanks again for the feedback!

Winch, front hitch, step bars, bed extender, bed step, gull-wing toolbox, tailgate lock, security system, cb radio, etc.
Sadly, the Midland 75-822 doesn't have a mounting device on the back, making it a bit more difficult to install (requires some type of holder).

I purchased the Cobra 75WXST, which has a microphone stud on the back. Since my truck will always have a CB (with mic) of some type (either this radio, a mobile with external mic, etc), I just installed (drilled two holes) the included mic hanger directly to the dash (in the silver area next to the radio). This places the cb/mic within easy reach and sight of my position behind the wheel. When I sell the truck, I'll just leave the (easily replaceable) mic hanger installed for the next owner.

Since the max power output of all CB radios is limited to 4w, range and performance is far more dependant on the antenna than the radio. A proper antenna, installed properly, will provide surprisingly good results. Considerations include length, design, mounting location, grounding, groundplane, and coax. Do some reseach into each of these before buying.

I have a question for anyone with knowledge of a foodsaver. I'm wanting to use my dehydrator for storing different foods and then vacuum seal in my foodsaver to store in truck, pantry, etc. I keep reading to store in freezer after one or the other, but can't find anything for doing both.
It seems if dehydrated properly, and vacuum sealed properly,it should have a good shelf life. How long, who knows.

I kept up the search. I found out if you use oxygen packs with dehydrated foods, and vacuum sealed bags, you can dry storage with shelf life depending on type of food.

I'm just wanting at least a year shelf life. I wish I could get longer on meats without freezing.
