You can never go wrong with a Tundra in my opinion. I do however, think that you have to be careful of believing much of the crap you read about the 3rd gen. I think the 3rd gens are very good trucks and Toyota is a company that will tweak and tune the issues that are coming up. Taco owners complained for a decade about wanting an upgrade and change but at the same time lots of taco owners don't like much change lol.

Ugh...this decision is tough. Made even more difficult by the fact that my mint Cruiser will have to go up for sale. Parked next to a new Tundra this morning at work and thought “yeah...I’m going Tundra”. Parked next to a gen 3 Taco at the supermarket and thought “yeah...I’m going Tacoma”

That's why I put a 250 dirt bike in the bed. Ain't nobody got time for all that slow crawlin' crap. I don't want to shit on anyone's sense of adventure but whenever I see people in jeeps "wheelin" I wonder WTF is exciting about going 2mph enough to do it on purpose. Park at the bottom, unload the bikes and rip that trail at WOT. Braaaaap!

EDIT- Oh, and for the OP... former 1st Gen Tundra owner here. IMO, the 3rd gen Taco now is about the same size, weight, has the same HP and tow rating as that old Tundra... but they should have given us that 4.7L v8 (maybe without the piston slap though). I would like some torque down low.

image.jpg I had a first gen tundra for 16 years and only 157k on her when I sold it for the taco. I was a little shocked at how comfy the seats are. 5 hours trips and no back problems. The tundra was better though on long rides. I miss her but I am happy with the new truck. This is her the day before I sold it.image.jpg

This. I've explained my Tacoma to my buddies that have Gen 2's this way several times.

The last 2 trucks I had before my Gen 3 Taco were a Gen 1 Tundra (2001 Limited 4.7L 4x4 Access Cab) and a Gen 2 Tundra (2007 SR5 5.7L 4x4 Crew Max). No longer need a truck that big.

My dad has a 2011 DCab 4.6l (I believe), but not the 5.7l and is a very nice truck which seems bullet proof.
Pros: feels very roomy especially after swapping my truck to his, power, more cargo capacity, seems simplistic.
Cons: No MT!!, Size for daily driving, piss poor gas mileage, very outdated interior.

Basically, no I would not trade my Taco for a Tundra right now

Not sure if a video of a cut up Tundra scraping its way through an obstacle is really the best example...

Had a 1st gen Tundra until it was totaled. And then 3rd gen Tundra. Now I have a 3rd gen Tacoma. Not my 1st gen Tundra but so much closer than the other Tundra.

I had a 15 tundra crew 4x4 with 5.7. just me and wife and I commute 80 miles a day 5 days a week and another 250 miles running around on weekend in the city and fishing or whatever. Loved my tundra and used to pull a big bass boat a lot but not anymore and went to 16 Colorado diesel crew and love the size so much more in all my uses. I am trading it in and new 18 Tacoma dbl cab I put deposit on today will be in first week of dec. If I needed towing or room for family tundra is absolute but these mid size are great and cant wait to get my new Tacoma. I like them lot more than my Colorado but cant complain its been good but im a Toyota guy. I also owned a 2007 Tundra a 2013 tundra also. I agree with above to the tee

Had Toyota Trucks & Tacoma's up until my 3rd gen Tundra. Nice truck but ended up bouncing back to a 3rd gen Tacoma.

I just went from a '17 Tundra to a '17 Tacoma. Went all the way from the 5.7 V8 Crewmax to the 2.7 i4 Double cab. I couldn't be happier with my decision. The good thing was that I got a great deal on the tundy originally so I was able to basically drive it for 7 months free because of the trade in I negotiated. Went through a volume dealer and negotiated the new Taco first and then brought in the trade negotiations.

The funniest part is that the dealer I traded to just sold my USED truck for $2k more than I ORIGINALLY PAID FOR IT from another dealer. You can't go wrong with either when the resale market is this strong.

    I traded my 06 tundra 4.0 v6 in on a 17 tacoma. My wife had a get 2 tacoma 4.0 v6.
I like the 3.5 a lot more because of the gas mileage I get 19- 20 vs 16-18 in the 4.0. You might have to step a little harder on the gas but when you do it likes to move. Towing is not a problem and off road with ect on this thing is a blast!

Okay does he do it here in WA? The Tundra is too wide to make it through most trails West of the cascade mountains.

Meant to say also mine has had pretty much every issue associated with the new Tacoma,I pretty much stay disgusted.Currently waiting on parts to come in for the diff recall. It has not been a bad truck as far as being dependable, but man how did this thing get released to the public with such poor quality control.

I drive a 2011 Tundra and bought my 16 year old son a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport. I love them both. Both Barcelona Red. I'm a total freak about anything that's not perfect but we've not noticed any issues with the 3rd gen Taco. Shifts seem fine, no wine from the diff, etc....My Tundra has been bullet proof, with only regular maintenance, brakes/rotors, tires, just replaced the shocks with Bilstein 5100's.....couldn't be happier with it and will drive it until Toyota finally makes some sort of appreciable update to the design. To date the Tundra is basically the 2007 model with aesthetic updates. Engine/Tranny etc.....have had little to no change but with that said, why change it when it works! Hoping to have similar good luck with the Tacoma and have it last my son through college.

Larger Toyota dealers in big cities have Tacomas you can rent. Strongly advised you do so before making a purchase decision. The Tacoma V6 is also used in the 2018 Camry and while the Camry version is a powerful and quiet performer, it's not in the Tacoma. The Tacoma version behaves as though it has retarded ignition/spark timing which is something that can make any engine feel gutless.
