We both have QL cases on our iPhone's and mounts on our mountain bikes. I also have a new suction cup mount I bought a few months ago and never used. Will probably find a spot for it in the new Tacoma.

I use the one from Toyota, the one in front of shifter. It’s awesome holds my phone right where I put it. pro’s its free
It hold phone, phones not in way of a thing, messages play threw car play, it uses infotainment screen to navigate
Cons you might not look cool with not displaying your phone so others can see.

When did we become so obsessed with are phones we have to have them in line of sight at all times?

Do some Tacomas not come with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto? Serious question, not being a smartass… if you have CarPlay/AndroidAuto what are you using your phone for? I would have thought phone holders would have been a dead industry by now.

I drive quite a bit and need to stay connected. Phone calls, texts, music, podcast, audiobooks, navigation, etc… I do all that with my phone facedown and in the cubby.

People here have a passion for a particular thing. It just is. But having a projectile at head height in event of crash makes me very nervous. None of those phone mounts will keep a phone in place in that event. Glad there is a place down low that works.

I had to go back and research what I bought. I hate suction cups.

This is the universal mount I bought:

Then I bought these two items from quadlock. The "base" mounts to the universal mount with the 4 hole pattern, then the "mag mount" screws into the base with the center hole screw.

Quad lock sells the center head screw. I believe I had to order the 4 bolts for the base separate. One of the two came with 4 screws but they were to thick for the other piece.

This is the final result. Sun at a bad angle this morning but gives you the gist. I tried to do this with the standard "twist" head mount but the torque to remove was a lot so I went with the mag head. So worth it!

Caution: I am 90% sure the two parts I listed are what I bought and used. I know I returned some things. It has been a few years since I pieced this together. Anyone trying to do similar, please do your due diligence.

I had a RAM X-Mount with a suction cup base mounted to the corner of the windshield in all my previous cars. It worked really well for my iPhones over the last fifteen years or so.

CarPlay makes mounting the phone (for me) superfluous, but if I did want to mount my phone, I’d use the X-Mount with a medium clamp base to attach to the oh-shit-handle on the right side of the center console. It’d be secure, in a place where cabling wouldn’t be obtuse, and down out of the way next to the shifter.
