thats the first thing I tried, but mice can literally lick it off the bait plate and not set off the trap. research confirmed this. watched a bunch of videos on youtube as well. hot glue a pretzel on there and the trap can be reused for multiple mice.

Hmmmm.....I've always had excellent results baiting with peanut butter. Just need to smear in on both sides of the trip pedal.

This is my situation as well. I've been wanting an outdoor cat for a while to deal with the moles, wife said no. A house up the street ended up being a cat factory in the last year or two. A bunch of outdoor cats. Well, now there are no more moles. I'll dump leftover scraps outside every once in a while and regularly see them coming through.
Make sure you spay or neuter them, or those 5 will quickly turn into 20. Not sure why you'd need 5 in the first place.

    Easy answer.

6 would be too many and 4 wouldn't be enough.

I live in a very small town located in the middle of a corn field. Every fall during Harvest, the rodents escape the fields for warmer more hospitable living quarters.

So, to stem the migration into our home. I use several approaches.
    1. Remove all food. Not only human food, but food like seeds, grass seeds, garden seeds....... also get the garbage sealed/closed up. Never store garbage any longer than the garbage pick up cycle.
    2. Inspect the house for any openings 1/4" or bigger. Plug these with steel wool, then gap filler. These "gaps" are generally under the bottom edge of siding where it meets the foundation.
    3. Trim any foundation plants around the house. Use cedar mulch.
    4. Set snap traps in garage, basement, kitchen, laundry rooms. Bait with peanut butter, check frequently. Always clean the trap after a kill with hot water, when setting wear rubber gloves, don't spread your scent on the trap. You ask "Laundry Room?", they like the lint for nesting.
    5. Our Terrier dog. He likes hunting mice. Really skilled. If he smells or hears one, the hunt is on. If you want to see skilled mousers, get onto YouTube search for "terriers hunting". Very entertaining. Nature at its best.

Typically, I'll get 1 or 2 each year. The dog will get 1 or 2. We keep a score. This year he leads me by one kill.

After winter sets in, the problem is very rare. The migration has ended and the survivors have found other homes.

Have you seen mouse signs? Droppings, shredded lint, chewed box or bags.
Where are you placing the traps?
    How are the traps positioned?

TBH none of those things. I've been parking like this for 2 years and this really only has become a problem in the past few months. I wouldn't have ever known other than the wires getting chewed, but i also have found rat droppings in the engine bay as well recently.

So i park my truck by my fence. On the otherside of my fence is a neighbor in another neighborhood. That is where i'm assuming the rats are coming from or in that area. I placed the snap traps along the fence assuming they'd run along the sides.

I dont keep any food out and we live in a new development neighborhood. They are building a new development behind my house which previously was just a field so i'm wondering if that work is causing them to seek out new homes......

Yeah, the construction is likely sending them looking for new homes.

    So, this is primarily outside.

Your situation, suggest to park away from the fence. Pick a spot where the critter needs to cross open ground. They like to scurry along structures, they avoid open ground.

Set some rat traps along the fence. Possibly some D-con, but be careful of kids and pets. If you use a poison bait, place it in a container that only the rat can access and anchor it.

I'd try predator urine on the truck and in the engine bay. Do you have coyotes in the area? If so, use that scent.
Take precautions to deter entrance into your home.

Yeah exactly, right now its only relegated to outside but need to take precautions from it moving inside. My hope right now is to get my truck to fit in the garage when i get it repaired at least until summer time. I've thought about moving where i park it, perhaps in the culdesac in an open space if i ever do park outside.

I've ordered some ultrasonic/LED under hood rat prevention things
Going to clean my engine bay and then spray it down with rat repellant
Continue to set snap traps outside and probably spray down the area with rat repellant too
Worst case i'll call in the professionals but hoping these things will solve this fo rnow
