yeah... that's why i ended up using AMS, the payment plans use your own card, debit or credit. Sweetwater and Musician's Friend/ Guitar Center have their own credit card that they issue. the only drawback is AMS caps at 12 months of payments (i think, i've seen 18 months during certain promos).

any of the 1987 series would be awesome, especially if they all have the same attention to detail. i have a friend also looking into a Mirage and another looking into the basses. the shred-y looking Telecaster knockoff looks cool too. that would have been my 1st choice if nothing was pink.

i highly recommend AMS. great customer service, either on the phone or through the chat/ email. competitive pricing, though i've never tried price-matching. they seem to get some items in stock before other vendors and of course the use-your-own-card payment plans.

i looked at the Fender too, but i liked the heel of the Mirage and only 2 pickups. and later found out that the Fender is made out of basswood v. alder on the Mirage and the scale length is 25.1", which is kinda funky. it's like an Ibanez wearing a Fender suit; basswood is what most of their lower end guitars are made out of and i think all S series have the 25.1" scale length. along with PRS which i think is a straight 25".

So far, I've not read to many positives on the new reissue HM.

The scale length never bothered me.
I never was taught the tech difference between any of them.

So, I've passed over this thread so many times as I didn't want to chase the dragon down the rabbit hole. But dammit all here I am.

I used to be a front of house engineer (about 3yrs) training under a recording studio/ live engineer. I loved doing it, but time tore me away, although I sincerely miss the grind. I never played string instruments as I played woodwinds but loved percussion. Now my boys are getting older, and I have decided that we could all learn the guitar together. I have an Ibanez that was given to me by my older brother, and I plan to purchase a Squire Mini for my boys. I wanted to warn everyone that while I do have a decent understanding of what to do with the currents coming into the board, my knowledge on the finer points of the guitar is limited and I will be asking what may seem as dumb or silly questions.

Thank you, and I am excited to learn and chat with the many of you already here.

That will be awesome to do with your kids. I've been learning for 15 years now. When I was a kid I just learned to play stuff I liked. As an adult, I am starting over with theory and it is a whole different experience.

As an aside, does anyone here also play piano? I have been thinking that would be the best way to elevate my understanding of theory. Right when we are thinking about an electric piano, my in laws decided to give us there beautiful 1963 Yamaha upright...like it was meant to be

it's preference really. longer scale length has more string tension. a set of 10s on a Fender (25.5") will feel tighter than the same gauge on a Gibson (24.75"). most people couldn't give a damn, but people that tune down, like myself, like to keep the higher tension to keep from the strings feeling sloppy.

that said. i still have multiple guitars with different scale lengths in different tunings. though i try not to go lower than C# standard on the shorter length ones. i think i'm running 12-56 gauge strings on a Gibson scale length tuned to D standard, and 13-58 on a Fender length tuned to C Standard.

thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Welcome to the thread! I’ve only been playing for about 18 months, myself. (Not counting making noise pollution when I was a teenager)
It’s very therapeutic, and should be fun to play with your boys!

Howdy fellas. I’m lookin to try and learn how to play since I have a bunch of time locked up in the house. I dabbled before but my patience was too thin and I always quit. Any recommendations on a good beginner guitar? I don’t want something too cheap that’s gonna fall out of tune all the time. I was lookin at the Yamaha FG and FS800. I’m ok buying used as well

Yamaha guitars are outstanding values. Obviously, the more you spend, the better the components. But, even lower priced Yamahas are really nice guitars. They simply do not build inferior instruments. I currently own two Yamaha guitars. Their acoustic guitars tend to have nice playing action, which is an especially big deal for new players. A guitar with uncomfortably high action is a recipe for frustration.

    Yamaha makes good beginner instruments

Yamaha inexpensive guitars are better than other guitars in the same lower price ranges as far as real playability goes. At least in my experience.

My first acoustic was a Yamaha F-310, I think it was under 200.00 new in like '97 or '98. It was still playable for nearly 10 years until it got knocked over and the neck split at the headstock. Not the most exciting guitar, but it definitely got the job done.

I've got the F-300 I think. Not the greatest acoustic.
It's older and the string height is pretty high.

Yeah, I got it to keep in the living room and fiddle on when I got the itch. Easier than getting the electrics going and all that jazz lol.
