It depends on the person. You could learn Iron Man in a matter of days if you're determined enough. Maybe two weeks with the solo again if you're determined enough. I still use tabs on occasion and I've been playing for almost 15 years.

I would suggest doing some online lessons. I am self-taught but I recently decided that I wanted to sort of reset and learn a more structured style of playing. And a lot of those types of learning tools are song based. So it wouldn't take long to learn simple riffs and parts of songs. I've used Fender Play and Yousician and while they are different approaches, they break everything down pretty easy and you will learn along with songs and can sort of advance at whatever pace you feel comfortable.

My 0.02: I took up the guitar in late October. Started out with online YouTube lessons - I found Justin Guitar to be the best. Marty is good but throws a lot at you - I think he has ADD… After Thanksgiving, I started with weekly 1/2 hour lessons in person ($25.00 per week). Playing got better because I understood more of what I was doing and had someone critique my form. Online was more of chords vs picking. I practice 30 minutes to an hour a day, more on weekends. Can I play songs? Sure but not popular ones. I’m using Hal Leonard guitar 1 and that goes over songs like Tom Dooley, Amazing Grace, Saints Go Marching In. Soon, I’ll be moving into some Beatles and Pink Floyd Wish you Were Here.

Wish you were here was one of the 1st songs I ever learned. Great tune and the intro lead is amazing.

That smile and joy at the end.. never gets old. I still do that when I learn a song I love hearing myself play.

I just picked up a Murphy lab 59 Les Paul Reissue. Ultra light aged. Factory Burst.
I just put it down after 6 hours of Tonal exploration. I had a 2016 LP standard. I wasn't really thrilled with it.
It was beautiful. Had nice tonal qualities. But the nut was cut wrong. The neck was twisted. That's why I only shop Sweetwater now.
I live on an Island and there are no music stores that carry Gibson. So...I have to go the internet route.

This guitar from the Gibson Custom Shop is worth every penny I paid.

All these LPs loving it. Can't wait until I am done building mine. Planning a P90 in the neck and a 59 in the bridge.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Love this! Sold my Lester to pick it up.
I will take more pics and share with you guys. Out of all the guitars I have owned this one speaks to me, like my Jazzmaster does. In the process of acquiring exactly what I want, which is why you will be seeing me move a few nice axes.

Had no idea about this thread, glad I stumbled across it. All good responses, vssman, sums it up nice. I've been playing for decades. I would go the route of weekly lessons, you'll need and soon appreciate the discipline and routine that in person lessons can offer, not to mention the critique, learn to read music it's worth it. By the end of 6 to 8 to ten weeks you should be able to play simple songs using all six strings and some basic chords. After that its practice, practice, practice. If your looking to sing as well, hum as you play (in tune hopefully), then slowly fill in with words. Paying for my guitar lessons was the best gift my parents ever gave me.

My Floyd did that and I just got some rubber and stuck it to the bottom of the metal square with contact cement on each piece. Let it dry on the rubber and on the metal piece and then stick them together. Then trim it to the size of the square pieces. You can use an old inner tube or some gasket making material from the auto shop with silicone.

Once it is dry then crank them down (rubber side down) and use something to brace against the torque… like a flat head screwdriver. It should stay straight.

I’ve also restrung and flipped the strings the other direction across all tuning keys. It throws you off a little but it seems to change things a bit. I’ve never done it on a Jackson with that angular headstock, but it works well on Strats and Mitchells (which are a freaking steal for a guitar to noodle around with).
