I blame Led Zeppelin - Babe I'm gonna leave you lol!

Taught myself a lot of that guitar. She always plays great and stays in tune.

Update on the MIK Squier. I would post the progress pics, but honestly it has been slow going, and the array would be pretty boring. But.... FYI Hipshot HB7's are a near direct replacement. The ferrules are a touch small, but the stock ones will still work. The screw holes to mount them are almost in the same places, but I will likely redrill to keep them seated comfortably. The Plates will mostly cover the existing holes. The Neck has never been oiled or even considered, so a treatment of F-one. A second treatment will follow prior to reinstalling. P/u's and a stacked concentric control plate are en route. Replacing the bridge with a new unbranded HiMass Brass Bridge. P/U routings are strange, the neck position is routed significantly larger than the Bridge. With the PG in place it isnt noticeable, but the cutout in the PG is sized correctly. Should make loading the new P/U's fun. more as it develops....

Interested to see some picks. I love working on guitars like that. I think I'm going to refinish a tele body soon.

Got this tremolo finally working this morning. The speed potentiometer was wired backwards. Now it works flawless.

Pic 1 - body in its original state. I didnt think to take pics before I had it disassembled.
Pic2 - (Back) started with a heat gun to remove the paint. took about 10min to realize sandpaper was a far superior approach in this instance. Stained black. The dark spots are where the top lam lifted away with the paint. when sanded clean, there was no discoloration, but the stain really soaked in the next ply. Gave a sort of "relic'd" look. Sanding was a bit aggressive at the horns, and bottom side, but also seemed to lend themselves to a worn look. was sanded to 320 prior to finishing.
Pic3 - (top) sanded by block and hand to only 180. I wanted a more rough texture to the wood, and let the TungOil varnish fill to smooth. this was in the hopes of a little more depth and light refraction. May add a few more coats prior to completion.
Pic 4 - just laid the PG and the neck in place to give an idea... If I saw it hanging in a store I would probably not give it a second glance. but it is growing on me all the time. Once I get the electronics, it should be a beast.... HopefullyJB 1.jpg JB2.jpg JB3.jpg JB4.jpg

You inspired me to refinish this. I never loved this burst, so this is my next project.

Going with blue, green, and yellow as my main colors and dark brown for outside.

Testing out a color scheme for the Tele refinish. The wood there is very soft and porous, unlike hardwood, so it's not perfect, but gives me a example.

    Update MIK Jazz Bass Rebuild:
HB7 hipshot tuners fit the headstock on center to the winding post, and the top (2) holes in the new tuner machine plate. the screws could be coerced in to the original hole locations, but this pushed the posts out of center and the ferrules raised to the bridge side. I loosened the screws and allowed the assembly to relax. I found that the bottom (2) holes of would need redrilled. Plugged the existing holes with super glue and Bamboo Skewers, then clipped and flushed. I don't think this would have been necessary, but the existing holes were too close and the drill bit would have walked.
Sidenote: the holes in the heastock are HUGE! The largest ferrule offered is a .709" OD. Had to get creative with some Masking tape to shim, but once installed and snugged they seemed to seat well. this was one of the issues that originally retired this bass. the ferrules were loose and would rattle when played.
One step closer. Once the strings arrive, I will mount the bridge. The existing Holes line up, but I may relocate anyway to maximize the intonation range. More to follow.....

so, I have been scouring the net trying to find another example of a hybrid Paint/stained guitar body. I can find absolutely nothing. Is this the only example of this finish scheme that exists? did I stumble on to something that is actually unique?

I hate that when you drill and it walks just enough to mess with things. I staring using drill jig guides which helps a ton and some Machinist center punches. Cool you're getting closer to finish.

I have seen people stain and then airbrush the sides and fade in for the sunburst kinda look. Sometimes stains just won't work the way you need them and they like to mix with other colors. Blue is a pain to work with likes to turn green and purple really easy.

I just bit the bullet, diluted blue 1:40 with neutral and came up with this color. It was so dark before it was almost purple.

This is the result. The center is neutral. It should turn kinda yellow once I finish it.
