I don't play, but I can strum a few chords. Unknown Martin on the left my Dad left me and an Ovation 1862 Custom Balladeer.

Nice pair of guitars. On the Martin, If you look through the sound hole at the base of the neck, you'll see some numbers. Usually a D- followed a 18, 28, 35, etc. Then a serial # number below that which will date it. From here I'd guess D28 or 35, without seeing the back. Nice heirloom!

Thank you. I looked all in there when I first got it, but never looked at the base of the neck. It has a 3 piece back. According to the stamp, it's an HD-35.

That Martin is a beautiful guitar. Based on the serial number looks like it was made between 1992-1993. Has the typical crack from the end of the fretboard into the sound hole. Not a big deal but may be worth getting it repaired at some point if you intend to keep it in playing condition (otherwise loosen the tension of the strings down a few steps). Overtime it will allow the neck to pull upwards from string tension and require a full neck reset.

I have a Guild from 2001 that has the same issue where they sprayed the nitro coat onto the side of the neck which didn't allow the neck to move separately from the body of the guitar as humidity changes. Have it stored in the case with humid pack to keep it stable and when I decide to pull it out again will have to go for a full neck rest now. Not interested in dropping that money (+/-$1k for that model of guitar) when I have other guitars that are hanging on the walls.

Regardless those are two awesome guitars to have!

Guitarjamman nailed it. Good idea to have that crack looked at whether you play it of not. It won't fix itself, and that's a much too valuable guitar to let go. Like said, loosen the strings a bit to relive tension in the meantime.

Thank you. I'll look into getting the crack fixed. The year sounds about right. He had a really nice Epiphone large body since the late 60's early 70's but always wanted a Martin and had it by the time I moved in with my folks in '99 to help out with physical stuff they could not longer do around the house.

Learning to play the guitar is a bit more challenging than I thought it would be…

I know power chords, bar chords, some of the pentatonic scale, and starting to slowly learn the scale called the A harmonic minor scale. I know I’m just scratching the surface of what I need to learn….
I’m still trying to develop proper form and understand the economy of movement. Not only that but, be able to be disciplined enough to keep time etc.

So much to learn and be able to train my hands for the muscle memory etc

The list is long my friends…

So I was kinda looking at a few things on eBay the other and got in a knock off rabbit while, and decided I needed to see how bad the knock offs were and had a hard time finding negative review videos, basically all of them said "the pick-ups are pretty trash but the rest of the guitar is pretty good" I figured if I'm gonna need to swap pick-ups anyway, why not save another $80 and just buy a kit, and use that $80 to pay for part of a decent pickup set that I can just install during the build... My daughter is 11 and I asked if she might be interested in learning how to play, so my thoughts are we will build this together (she is most likely going to just sit and watch, but she would be there anyway) and we will be ~$300 into a entry guitar that has a chance of playing and sounding good... And if it doesn't work out with her I'll probably be stuck with a purple double cutaway PRS style LP

Nice. I endeavor to venture on a project such as this. I'm quite woodwork savvy...my bain is electronics, but I can solder.

Cool as shit though to build with your 11 yr old. Mebbe she jumps right in on the hands on assembly work.

Since your going PRS-ish...instead of a hundy for the pups you're looking at, what about some buddy arc welder upgrades his PRS SE pups and is selling them? Dunno what the price point is down there for 85/15S market

I had thought about check around for used stock PRS PUPs, but I had basically talked myself into those for the price point and the ability to forgo any soldering and be able to swap PUPS plug and play in the future as long as I stayed with guitar fetish brand or if that somehow became not proprietary. Kind of future proofing this one lol. I just ordered the kit today so we are a ways off from electronics, but I may keep my eye out in marketplace or something

I was expecting a ton of play where the neck fits up because that was one of the complaints I saw for cheap kits, but it's tight, like I may have to sand a bit to get it in all the way when I glue it.... Also excuse the store bought cinnamon rolls
