Grab the make and model and google it. Lot of good info on the interweb. I could see it being the thermostat, control board, sensor or wire. Should be easy enough to poke at

I would check your thermostat (pins on back) with a meter to make sure it’s actually working as it should.

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
I like what some one earlier said, ONLY if you feel compfy -- open up the front cover with the power off -- look around at the circuitry (with a nice bright light) see if you see anything obvious like a loose connection -burnt areas etc. . Anything you touch -- just be ready to "UN DO what you did -- only try one "maybe" fix at a time. I have been in electronics all my life ( I am 70+) , and have learned these processes the hard way. Just don't do anything that you can't un-do. Again -- if you don't feel compfy -- don't do any thing!!

Currently in the process of doing this, reading what each wire does now.
May give it a go tomorrow. If anything I’ll take the faceplate off and have a look.
    Thanks

They are a lot more common down south where it doesn’t get so cold

When the system go into defrost it reverts back to being an AC unit to heat the coils up on the outdoor unit and most turn the strip heat on so the temp doesn't drop inside but I never saw one act the way you are describing but it may be a new "feature" to have the T-Stat notify the home owner that it is on. This not controlled by the T-Stat.

I have not heard good things about Nest's durability, contacts failing on the back-plate.

Not sure I understand the Nest comment.
    You have heard good things?
Or have NOT, as in the contacts?

I like the nest. I like to see how many hours and when my ac kicked on. No issues what so ever. I turned off the learning feature though.

Have you tried changing the battery in the thermostat if it has one?

Well guys, I figured I give you an update.
I replaced the thermostat, and it worked great for about 1 hour.
Everything worked like it should. Heat and cool both came on and went off at the desired temperature.

Then it did the same thing. The heat kept running even if I turned the system OFF.
The only thing that would kill the system was to turn the power off at the Disconnect on the Air Pump.

I learned something. We have a units both inside the house and outside.
(I guess this is called a split unit?)
If you turn the power off to the unit inside the house, it kills the blower fan.
But it does NOT turn off the heating portion. Shit got hot quick. With no air blowing over the heating coils, it got HOT.

Anyways, I’m out of my league on this one.
Called a HVAC company, they are coming next Monday.
Until then, we’ll just dress warm. If I have to I can turn the power back on to the Heat pump.
Then cut it off at the breaker once the house gets warm.

    No problem man.
It was worth a shot anyways.
At least the new thermostat has Alerts for Over Heat or Under Cooling.
The factory preset was set to 92’. That’s a bit high if you ask me.

I didn’t get to play with the settings long.
Now that the system is OFF, I can’t do much.

One night I woke up in July or august freezing cold and it was like 50 in the house. The battery was dying in the thermostat and caused the Tstat to not completely die but malfunction and not switch off the a/c.
Like waking up in a refrigerator

Wish this was as simple as a battery.
This one didn’t have a battery.
No need really, if we don’t have power to the house, we don’t have anything.
We have an all electric system.

I was pretty sure it wouldn’t be the thermostat. The contactor is the easiest to test.

I’ll admit, I don’t know anything about these systems. If I were to guess. I’d describe it as something is “sticking”.

In the automotive world, it’s be like a sticking relay. But again, I know just about nothing on HVAC.

As far as the AUX coming on, If I remember correctly, there is normally an outside air temp switch on heat pumps that turns on the strips at a certain outdoor temp. Some people have disconnected them due to the high cost of running that AUX. could be part of the issue, but likely not the whole thing.
