Just trying to scope out if their is a large enough interest in a "LEGAL" refueling tank for our Tacoma's. I have searched the Forums and don't find a reasonable sized tank for the bed size or load carrying capacity. I know that a larger capacity replacement (same location as stock tank) tank or in-bed auxiliary (feeds into stock tank) tank would require CARB testing and that is very expensive.

So the only legal solution would be a refueling tank, which can fuel our trucks or any other equipment we carry.

I selected 10, 20, 30, or 40gal as the options because I think anything bigger would take too much bed space in our Tacoma's. The previous tanks would add 60lbs, 120lbs, 180lbs, and 240lbs respectively, not including the weight of the tank.

    What do you guys think?

The options I selected are well below the maximum size, their is certain design regulations you have to follow though.

I'd say 15-20gal tank would be nice

I personally like the 20gal option because if I were to use it just to refuel my truck, it would double my range. I hate to drive to a camping spot and have to fill-up in the last gas station and pay $.50-$.75 extra per gallon just to top of my tank.

I voted "No" simply because I don't have a need. But it seems that 10 gal would be too small for there to be much of a point. Two 20L Scepters or Jerry cans give you 10 gal already. So it seems like the 20 and higher are the only ones worth making.

Good point, something well designed to take the minimum space and easy to use (fill and siphon) would be a plus. Though once you siphon you have completely defeated the purpose of CARB to begin with...

Worth noting that three Scepters or Wedcos fit perfectly between the wheel wells taking just 8 inches of bed space at the front of the bed. Can be held in place with the front or side bed rails. So that's a pretty nice 15 gal option. Lets you mix and match water as well depending on your needs.

What about rigging a cage for 2 MFC's in that location and use the Scepter Flo n' Go pump system

I hear you, let's remember that there is regulations that need to be followed and the design almost has to be a universal one to fit 1st and 2nd gen Tacoma's, and even possibly other smallpickups.

You can do whatever you want with a CARB container once you buy it, including taking a shower in gasoline or dumping it down your driveway. My point was just that once you use a siphon you've completely defeated the whole point of CARB having certified it since you are allowing lots of a gasoline vapors out while fueling. At which point you might as well not have a CARB container to begin with.

Which does not mean making a CARB compliant container is a dumb idea at all, because if you want to sell it then it needs to be CARB compliant. I was just pointing out the CARB regulations are kind of dumb. The OP is completely correct to only consider making a CARB compliant container though.

Does bring up a question I don't know about though, which is what are the CARB regulations for a fuel container that stays mounted in the bed? I'm used to the portable cans with their hideous CARB spouts, what are the regs for something you can't use a spout on to begin with?

image.jpg The dimensions will vary depending on the design. If we just take 1st gen Tacoma and place a 20 gallon tank between the wheel wells of a double cab, The tank would be 37"L x 10" W x 13" H.

    That will make it 4,810in^3
The volume of one gallon is 231in^3
Therefore that would make the tanks volume, 20.8gal

Vapor space needs to be considered as well, which should be 10%.

I'm thinking of something like this tank above, but not the final design. I have some different design ideas with the constraints we have on a small pickup.

The design instead of just being a box could be changed to going up and then out and over the wheel wells. This way the length of the tank is longer over the wheel wells and the Width can decrease.

If I was going to do this make it real Something in the size of 80 or 100 gallons.

I all ready use a 100 gallon transfer tank for hauling fuel oil

My tank is 24"x60" might be 24" high as well but I never really measured .

With the spare tire in front it comes right to the tail gate.

I can take one later .

My driveway is over 500' feet long all uphill going out.

No one will deliver fuel oil once the weather gets cold and we have some snow on the ground..

I do like to have some heat to keep the pipes from breaking .

Now once I haul the load of fuel the tank comes out till I need it again.

Yeah right! I drive across country quite a bit. Love the idea of not stopping as much for fuel, especially through the desert. Or like Texas where sometimes it's hundreds of miles between gas stations. Let's hear more. I'm way down for an auxillary tank.

Toyota in foreign markets (where rear crash requirements are more relaxed) offers an aux tank in place of the spare tire. (The tire goes on a swing-out carrier.) Something to think about.
