Any interest in a swaybar disconnect?

To achieve independent suspension. The (anti) sway bar ties both sides together to reduce body roll on turns. If you remove it, it “unties” left and right side suspension assemblies allowing them to truly move independently. The difference off road is worth the barely noticeable increase in body roll on road, to me, so it’s history.

Have anyone tried running sans sway bars in strong crosswinds, especially with a heavy load mounted up high on the truck such as a rack, RTT, etc? Just wondering how it handles on highways under those conditions.

Our mall has curbs like those near the main entrance, and speed bumps too! :)

I only have a tonneau, but the trip that I just took had the whole WA coast blowing at me sideways with both gusts and high steady winds. It was not an issue.

Funny guy! That curb is a daily frustration, for our cars / motorcycles also. It is just an example of what folks could try with or without.

I pulled the sway bar off in anticipation of being out solo for three out of five days:

I would have been unhappy getting around the NW tip of WA with the sway bar on:

I'm not sure what was up with that green track. I didn't get in that far.

Most of those tracks are on road, but the sway bar being gone made the off road stuff much better.

I wouldn't recommend removing it if you carry load. On my trips I usually have 500-800lbs in the bed and I like to get to my destinations at a faster pace. Winding through the mountains with a full load and no sway bar isn't fun. I took it off my 2nd gen and although I LOVED it once I got to the desert, unloaded my gear and hit the trails. But everywhere else in between you're significantly reducing your cornering ability and decreasing your polar moment of inertia... which is downright dangerous in an emergency situation, so I put it back on. But I also cruise 80-85 mph to my destinations and make good time. If you remove the sway bar and just go 10mph below the advisory signs on all turns you'll be totally fine, to me thats just frustratingly slow though, I usually double the advisory speeds then -10 "for safety" :)

Its not a terrible idea I know plenty of people go without them, but don't lie to yourself you are SIGNIFICANTLY reducing on road performance to gain significant offroad performance.

A remote disconnect like OP is talking about would be perfect and I would be the first to sign up!

Thanks- I will have to practice taking it off just to see how it goes, if I were camping off-road for a while you are right, probably the better place and time to remove it. Thanks for your input!

I love ONP! Used to work as a seasonal back country ranger there, what a gem that park is. Looks like you spent some time in some of my favorite places there, too. Thanks for sharing!

Just remove the swaybar and be done with it. 6 Tacoma's since 1995 and swaybar has been removed on each truck since day 1. I'm still alive!

It's 11 bolts on mine including the weaksauce skid foil. The rail and sway bar bolts are nice and big, so needing a torque wrench is not critical. I always use one though because my feel for gutentight is often too much.

It sounds like a dream job, esp in that beautiful area.

You're welcome. It was a really nice time.

I got in as far as I felt comfortable solo without a winch. I do have shackles and a cheap tow strap but finding help this early in the season would have been fun. Ha! I brought along an air tank if I needed to air down in a pinch, but the truck was just great.

I had planned on spending Thursday night at Elwa or Altair. I knew they had washed out a few years back and was bummed to find that they are still gone. I ended up in a quite little gully off of an FS road (that first pic).

They call them quick disconnects for a reason and not quick connects. Try an reconnect the sway bar single end link of a even slightly uneven surface like a trail and report back.

I think the only reason is for highway driving. If you had to swerve to avoid a collision, no sway bar could cause issues in handling. Also, if your insurance company saw you had taken it off when they go to inspect your ride you would be F**ked

It's a good idea. Here's the one I did for my truck.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/sway-bar-disconnect.391221/

However, to get full benefits you need to disconnect both sides, otherwise the connected side is still semi limited (it's noticeable). Second, with proper springs and shocks driving without the sway bar isn't bad.
