Sounds like you need to drive over to the dealership and look at one, and drive one. I myself love my 2017 but then again I drove it first and researched all the options.

If you liked the 08, just get a late model second gen and love driving a truck again!

TW is like a bad acid trip...when I'm surfing around here I think my turd gen has every gremlin listed in every "oh snap son, my turd gen is crap yo, F Toyota...Ima lawyer up fool" thread I read. But then, I step away from TW come down from that bad trip and BAM...truck is just fine.

Go to your local dealer and test drive one.

Lol I hear ya. I'm not believing everything that I read on the Internet either but thought I'd raise the question as part of my research. I definitely need to drive one

Hahaha, I do this too. Read about the bed not being level, went out to my gravel driveway, looked and mine wasn't level. Tape measured everything and worked up my speech for when I got to the dealership. Then I parked on level ground in a parking lot and it was fine.

Isn't your truck black? Could always just rattle can it temporarily with a matte black or semi-gloss? I think the SR ones come with the unpainted black ones. If you're willing to buy these, Olathe toyota parts site has a good part list breakdown.

I'm not sure what you expect people here to tell you, it seems you would've been better off buying the Tacoma to begin with even if it had problems and you decided to get rid of it you have much , much better resale value then your canyon so now you have a vehicle with problems and bad resale value . Now you're going to take a chance on a Tacoma anyways all because you listened to this forum with the most badmouthing Tacoma haters around! I would say 99% of the Tacoma's are perfect and flawless. but you decided to listen to all these negative people around here and they steered you into the canyon now you want their bad advice again ? don't do it ! By what you like , you can have problems with anything.

I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
I'm loving mine. No complaints. I had to get use to changes that to me aren't bad, just different. I've had a few Toyota trucks (79,84,88) then thought I needed full size and have been in them the last 10 years. The last was a 3/4 Dodge. I liked it, almost didn't sell it. But after a few months in my Tacoma, no regrets. (other than how much money I spend finding stuff in here)

I have the option of driving a work truck, and like someone said above, I drive mine because I like it. Get a dealership to let you take it for a day, that's what sold me.

Bingo. Don't let us tell you what YOUR choice should be. Go drive it. If you don't like, time to test something else. Don't like it, rinse repeat.

I have a mid year 2016 (shipped in July 2016 to dealer) SR5 with a 4 cylinder engine. So far no problems and is a joy to drive.

What I have noticed is that occasionally when you have to accellerate going up hill it will jump to another gear and then go back to the previous gear once I've gotten up the hill. Reminds me of my previous truck (2001 Ranger) that had overdrive, which I always had on. It did the same thing.

If this is everybody's idea of a gear searching problem, well it doesn't seem to be a problem. It's actually how the truck works.

I havn't driven the 6 cylinder TRD series extensively, so this gear hunting issue is might be different thing all together than what I described above. The problem if it exists seems to be in one or both V6 engine types.

I must admit that the reporting of the problems associated with the V6 did go into the decision to get the 4 cylinder. I would say it was 20% of my decision. My main reason is that I didn't need all the other fancy schmansy stuff, i just wanted a smaller reliable truck that gets reasonable gas mileage to replace my Ranger.

Having said that...this truck meets and exceeds my expectations. It's like my Ranger was a mini truck from another era. And it wasn't that my Ranger was the basic vanilla variety, it was the XLT extended cab 6 cylinder. I'd still be driving it if it didn't morph into a total POS at 147,000 miles of gentle driving and routine maintenance. For example I went 120,000 miles before changing the OEM sparkplugs...which impressed the mechanic. I got the impression from him that it was an indicator that the truck wasn't drove hard and abused.

At any rate I'm glad that I stepped up and got my Taco. For whatever reason 4 cylinder versions are hard to come by around here and I'm glad I got mine.

I think Car & Driver said it best (with respect to the 2017 Tundra but it applies to the V6/Auto Tacoma too): "it's totally tolerable."
