If I'm serious about purchasing a used vehicle I hire a body shop technician to check the vehicle out. Then I pay for a PDI at the dealer complete with compression test. If everything passes I buy it.

I did this with my Acura. It cost me $50.00 for the auto body guy and $120 for the PDI at the Acura dealer. That was about 10 years ago. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind.
