Well said, and when you work for an elected official that in of itself can pose a different dynamic.

I missed this thread last night- but I've been involved in Federal LE for about 7 years now. I've been out of it for the past year or so and haven't really noticed any difference. My wife understands what I was up to so that made it pretty easy.

I had a blast with all the stuff I did....but Coast Guard LEO stuff is a bit different from the way troopers/sheriffs/local cops.

wow just found and read through this thread, it's encouraging and scary at the same time. I'm planning on going into LEO as a career (when they start hiring again in AZ) when I finish my degree. I have one more semester and it's time to start looking for an opening.

Does anyone have some tips on how to break into the community? My ASU adviser suggested I intern with a department, but the recruiting officer said that wouldn't help???

I've been working out and continue to do so in preparation for the academy.

Masada, just be ready to take a lot of tests. Everyone's. Once you are in at one place, chances are that will make it a little bit easier to move on to another place-if you so choose.

4+ years and going strong..... Currently in Daytona Beach and I have seen and done it all. I love every minute of it all.. My current injuries (but completely worth it) to date include 2 broken finger, a fractured radius, and a broken heart because I thought this job will bring on the ladies..... J/K lol On a serious note my fellow brothers and sisters in this field they mean the world to me in our endless fight to make the world a safer place...

Well out here there are literally no places hiring aside from the place I already work as a seasonal, and I dont like the scheduling 72 hour shift, which isnt bad now, but when I start a family I dont want to be gone all the time, and once you promote out here to Engineer or Captain you are never home in the summer time. That and when I went down to the LA area to do some ride alongs I fell in love with it.

HAHA I love it. I can only imagine what you run into in Daytona Beach. How is it during spring break? :D

Masada, You are more than welcome to ride with me and learn about the career. Ride alongs, volunteering, and education are the key elements in my opinion to get your foot in the door. If anybody else is serious about becoming a cop you're more than welcom to PM me for a ride along.
