One of my disc golf buddies had to build a "rack" for the bed of his ranger because he got a citation for his canoe resting on the cab. As in, the tailgate was closed on the end of the canoe and about the middle of hit was resting on his third brake light. It was kind of like when you see dump trucks hit bridges with the bed raised in the air. Of course, his wooden rack would have done well to have been properly mounted and not merely set in those square holes on the top of the bed rail...

Add a couple J cradles to the top of our 18" rack and you are ready to float.

    Yeah.
Well, I have a free home-built rack for a 2nd gen that you can come pick up. I was planning on moving it to my 3rd gen, but it wouldn't work so it is just sitting. It's about a 14" rack, so not cab high -- you would have to fashion some mounts to raise your boats above the cab. But it's made of steel, not PVC or wood. Anyway, you are welcome to it.

Made it back from CO with an only slightly more damaged truck than when I left! What a great trip. Too bad I couldn't have stayed for longer. There's always next year though!CO1.jpg

    Yeah.
Hard to tell the size of that hole, but certainly looks bad and big enough. From what I have found on the interwebs, you have 12 years from the in-service date, so it looks like you should be covered for a frame replacement since you appear to have a 2007. I'm not sure what they have to do if they deem it unsafe to drive, most likely provide you with a loaner. From some of the other threads I have seen, there could be a wait, but most of those are in rust belt areas where they have stacks of new frames they are going through.

Good luck, and let us know what they say.

 Is that yours?? Do you seriously have a complete hole rusted through and you're just now taking it in for an inspection? I had my frame replaced and mine was not nearly that bad yet.

@Dave_M How does your bed rack mount to the bedsides? Do you bolt down from the top or from the inside with angle iron?

It’s bolted from the inside. I reach over the rails to access the bed a lot so bolts from the top would hinder that. I don’t think it would be very secure laterally if the base weren’t made of angle iron.

Got it. I was planning on doing mine from the inside. Do you have any rubber between the bottom of the angle iron and the top of the bedside?
That hole looks like it would have definitely been there 2 years ago. I hope it's not too late for you to get a swap, but by the sounds of a previous post you may be okay. Let us know how it goes
